As some of you know, I like wine almost as much as watches. Lately, I've been focusing on the smaller, boutique wineries. So when I got an invitation from Fantesca to participate in their 2012 harvest, I jumped at the chance. My wife and I hopped a plane for a long weekend in Napa Valley, California.

Fantesca is a newer winery in St. Helena, California. The owners were related to the founder of Best Buy, and used their good fortune to start a vineyard in the Spring Mountain District of Napa, near St. Helena. A few years ago, they hired the diva of California winemakers, Heidi Barrett, as their winemaker.

It's a beautiful part of the US, as this photo of their vineyard shows:

Here I am in front of the winery's Cave, wearing my Collectors' Forum Da Vinci:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/f83ad8113579aa381752748a9b24faf9.jpg
I debated what to wear, and thought this one was sporty/dressy, and the steel bracelet would work well.

Our targets were of course the vines, and more particularly Fantesca's Cabernet Sauvignon grapes:

Mountain cabs can be special: the altitude and soil stresses the vines, and with proper cultivation the fruit can be particularly full as a result.

Unlike a watchmaker's tools, all you need is a glove to hold the cluster of grapes plus the knife shown here:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/570afeb503f1b2a2386ef1a0a45c9b22.jpg
And here I am, getting ready to attack:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/13180ca2fafd0741ba3b3d8d4e70d7c1.jpg

Success! Here I am, with about 15 pounds of grapes:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/a2823ffaed62229401bfe1ded7e050fe.jpg

The bins are carried to a truck, and emptied into a larger bin:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/1e9632c9607eccd51fd4e619abe83516.jpg
The group of about 20 probably harvested about 300 pounds in about 90 minutes --we were slow, but meticulous:

The large bins are then fork-lifted to a sorting machine, which has a conveyor belt:
    i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n558/michaelfriedberg/a47af710706674b7f91fd4997222dbd3.jpg
We then manually sort, removing MOG (material other than grape):

The guy with the Breitling didn't do nearly as well as me with my Da Vinci ;)
Actually, I think this activity is a good way to scratch any watch.

    Out come the sorted grapes:

Which are left in bins until they're ready for crushing and fermentation in steel tanks:

And, finally, we celebrated with lunch on the Estate's grounds, with of course a plentiful helping of 2008 and 2009 vintage wines:

Being a gentleman farmer is really tough --and the Collectors' Forum Da Vinci survived this ordeal!

    Michael,
Boy, what an experience, I now have another activity to add to my bucket list.
Looks like it was hard work but great fun. I think I agree w Alan and would prefer a Casio for this type of work. Out of curiosity, about how many pounds does it take for a bottle of wine?
    thanks for posting.

    Regards,
    Kevin

Kevin, I don't have all the numbers but this winery grows 10 acres of Cabernet, resulting in several tons of fruit. This produces 32 barrels of wine which, in turn, results in less than 750 cases. That means 10 acres only yield 9000 bottles of wine! Their product is really concentrated, but as the owner said "winemaking is essentially reduction".

Alan, one advantage of wearing a watch like the CFDV and having a lot of wine is that eventually, you think you're wearing two! ;)

Wonderful. Looks like a very nice time in a beautiful place. I wonder how many of the 750 cases that will be produced were reserved by temporary laborers. :)

    Michael,
What a great event! How fun to participate in the production of some of the wine you might get to taste. Thanks for posting. Love the DaVinci.

a conversation heard in the vineyard : Mr. Breitling : " hey mister IWC, you seem to have some experience in wine-drinking, when do I know I had too much ?"
Says mister IWC:" you see these two IWC's ? When you see four, than you are drunk."
Says mister Breitling: " what, two IWC's, I only see one..."

    Congratulations again Michael!

I trust I can say for all of us here that you made us very proud, both of you and of the Da Vinci.

Lovely photos of a beautiful place, I've been to wineries in Europe and in South Africa, but now I feel I have to go and visit some in California.

    Thanks for sharing!

P.S. I think the Prada shoes show a real understated touch of class!!!

Very nice report. For sure the wine tastes better to the ones who tried to take care of it. Glad your Da Vinci is OK as I wouldn't take my IWC for such event either :o)

I am relieved to see the weather for the Napa harvest is better than the weather in Bordeaux a week or so back. No wonder Napa wines are rising in price. In Bordeaux, the estates use cheaper labour from Portugal and Spain. In Napa, they use Chicago lawyers wearing expensive Swiss watches billing $$$ by the hour.
