Movement and case serial numbers date it to about 1960. One owner for the past 30 years but prior to that provenance is unknown. The dial is exceptional when viewed under magnification, with an almost perfect finish and no signs of oxidation. My thoughts are that this may be an older service replacement dial. It's hard for me to believe that the original (55 yr. old) soft iron dial could still be in such good shape. Perhaps it was replaced at the same time the original fish crown was replaced with the non-fish service crown that is currently on the watch?

The lugs are full and can be seen compared against a mint unpolished 666. One or two of the lugs may have received a very light polish. I say this because there are slight variations in lug thickness.

The red arrows on the caseback show that the angles are sharp and crisp, I also see remnants of the original circular brushing. As you can see, the caseback has seen better days. Lots of scratches and oxidation. Thankfully nothing too deep. It is nowhere near as dramatic looking in real life. In fact I was somewhat startled by how rough the caseback looks in my pics! I'm glad that no one saw the need to "clean it up" leaving it nice and shiny with all of it's original contours destroyed

The movement is exceptionally clean and is running within COSC spec.

I'm delighted with this one. It's been on my wrist since I received it 3 days ago..

Please feel free to critique, analyze, ponder, etc.
    cheers,

    Todd

That is sooo nice. Why don't they make them like this anymore?

The only criticism I can come up with is that the date window looks more balanced on the 8541 movements (nearer the edge of the dial), but now I'm just griping for the joy of complaining;)

Congratulations on a perfect accusition. Where it on good health!

Thanks Henrik. And I completely agree about the date window. To my eye the 666A's (no date) are a better looking watch. But the date complication is helpful at work so I usually wear my AD's when I'm working.

    Hi Todd,
I recognise that watch...I had registered for the online bidding, but got my timing wrong and missed the auction lot by 5 minutes!! You really scored there.
    Well done.
    Best regards,
    Ian

    Dear Ian,
Thanks so much for the kind words. And yes I'm delighted with it, but feel a bit of a guilty twinge that I grabbed it from a fellow IWC forumer..
Hopefully you'll snap up something nice in the very near future!
    best

Looks great. Congrats. Eventually an area of IWC I need to learn much more about. Post a wrist shot or two if you can.

    Cheers,

My favorite 666AD dial variation, and it looks to be in beautiful shape. Congratulations on a fine acquisition, Todd!

Thanks Tony. My collecting skills have benefited greatly from the teaching of a buddy who used to live in NY!

    Hi Todd
Congrats for this lovely piece! I like the dial/strap colour combination. It's beautiful.
    Nice wristshot too.

    Thanks Chris.
Glad you noticed the strap color. It's hard to see in the pictures but it's an unusual sort of bone/cement color alligator that picks up the vintage lume perfectly. I like to hand the girlfriend a bunch of straps when I get a new watch. Her choices are often better than mine-like in this instance!

    Thanks CB,
Nothing quickens my pulse like a 666. Although recently I'm starting to get a real feel for the 866, and may start a search for one this year.
    cheers,
