This post is the story of how I came to wear this watch (briefly) yesterday.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0582.jpg

A few weeks ago, Nad emailed to say that he would be in Geneva for a few days and asked if I'd like to meet. I, of course, said yes and we agreed to "talk" again closer to the date. Then last week I was at the Geneva boutique looking for a strap. Mauro, who knows that I frequent the forum, mentioned that Nad would be in town and would go on a factory tour. He asked if I'd like to join. I didn't have to think too hard.

So yesterday Nad and Houda along with Jan and Nadia from the boutique left Geneva on an early train bound for Schaffhause, via Zurich. I live at the other end of Lake Geneva so rather than go first to Geneva, I arranged to meet them at the Zurich train station.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0566.jpg

It's a relaxing train ride through very nice scenery.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0565.jpg

After meeting on the platform, we boarded a train for the promised land. I almost got a good photo of the Rhine Falls as we entered town.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0567.jpg

At the Schaffhausen station, we met up with Oliver from IWC and Nad's friend Asi, perhaps the most knowledgable watch collector I've ever met. By an amazing coincidence, he was in Schaffhausen on business and joined us for the afternoon's activities.

    First stop, lunch.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0569.jpg

Yogurt and a banana is a much more typical lunch for me but the Sweet & Sour Tiger Prawns were fantastic.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0571.jpg

After lunch, we strolled to IWC for a tour which included time in the museum and a look at watchmakers hard at work. We saw bunches of 5001 and ceramic Big Pilots in various stages of completion. Quite understandably, no photos allowed.

The real highlight of the day for me was at the end of the tour. Laid out in a conference room, every calibre in the current IWC collection, including this pair:
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0573.jpg

After a brief flirtation with the pilot line...
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0575.jpg

    ...I headed for the Portuguese.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0578.jpg

It's on the big side for me but I really like it:
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0589.jpg

I've admired this watch in photos but now I really understand why so many of you are crazy about it. I think I'll get a paper route and start saving my pennies.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0580.jpg

And now back to that Minute Repeater. Actually make that plural. Here, I'm slumming it with the gold version. I must say, the chimes are like the voices of angels. Just amazing. I suspect all of you recognize the other guy:
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0584.jpg

Herr Doktor Nad went to work...
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20121003_0574.jpg

...and soon one of the Minute Repeaters looked like this. They put all of the parts in a bag for him and I think they gave him a small discount:

Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the train station. Nadia(boutique), Barbara(our tour guide), Me, Nad, Asi, Houda, Oliver(IWC) and Jan(boutique).

It was a wonderful day. IWC were excellent hosts and there are some new additions to my wish list. It was an honor to finally meet Nad and his lovely wife. Not bad at all for my first mini gtg.

Glad you made the pilgrimage. And with terrific company.

I have taken the tour twice. And it is a fine way to spend your time. Several years ago the setup was different. Our tour guide was Kurt Klaus and pictures were permitted. I took a hundred shots and I often look back at them.

Wow! What a fantastic experience and something I hope to achieve myself in 2013. Thanks for sharing. Nad and David, if you ever make it down to Singapore let me know. It is a watch heaven here.

David, Looks like you guys had a great time. I hope to get a tour in sometime in 2013.
See that you have now caught the PPC Blue dial virus. Good luck with it.

    Thanks for posting.
    Regards,
    Kevin

David, thanks for sharing your trip experience with us as well as giving us a look at all the IWC's on display for the touch and feel session. Like Alan, I have been on the tour many times. I learn something new on each visit. The museum is spectacular and much better than the old one up in the attic of the main building.

The blue dial PPC is indeed a beauty, I finally had the pleasure of seeing not just one but two last week!

Thanks for sharing the experience and pictures. As a newcomer (and a new fan) to IWC, I am so tempted to take a vacation to Schaffhausen, Switzerland just to visit it. One day.. one day...

Oliver, I enjoyed the day immensely. Thank you for the opportunity. Maybe next time we'll have the chance to discuss strategy over a beer. :)

I agree with those of you who like the blue PPC on my wrist. Fantastic watch. My wife preferred the Minute Repeater so I guess that's the one I have to get. If I find a pile of money on the street.

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

    David,

    1) you find a Pie of Money on the street - you have my permission to get both!

    2) thanks for sharing this great Mini GTG report with us.

Did you guys catch a glimpse of my Black Beauty (watch #22) in the museum too, or have they sold it to defray expences - LOL :-)

    David,

What a wonderful travelogue you allowed us to join in on. First things first..I know exactly what I want for lunch tomorrow.

I'll bet you really appreciated watching production of the 5001's now that you just acquired your's. I must say, of all the watches that you posted, that repeater is the crown jewel. The yacht club looked pretty damn nice too !

I got a bit of a laugh at the pic of you and Nad in his Doctors (lab) coat smiling. Last time my doctor and I had a similar pose, I was thanking him for the good news and that I wouldn't need that procedure again for at least 5 years.

What a great time you all must have had. Hope to have the opportunity to visit Schaffhausen in the near future. Thanks again David for taking the time to share with us a glimpse of your first GTG.

    Andy
