I am about to purchase my first IWC and i am undecided between the new Pilot Mark XVII OR the Portuguese Chronograph 3714-46 (Silver dial with Blue numbers).I need some advice, which would you recommend as a first watch.I think the Pilot would make a better everyday watch but would the Portuguese stand up to everyday use?
I also read on the internet that the Portuguese 3714 with the new last digits 46
comes with the Tang Buckle. Does any member have any information on this.

    Thanks in advance,
    Sean.

I have a 3714 and a Mark XV, and love them both. The XV wears very thin and goes with anything...I'm not sure the same will hold true for the Mark XVII though. If you wear a dress shirt often, the 3714 has a tendency to hang-up a bit on the cuff, due to the shape of the bezel. I love the XV for it's utter lack of pretense. Both will stand up to everyday wear. I have had several Portuguese chrono's and they have all come with tang buckles.

If you buy them both you would no longer have this worrisome decision:-)

The Portuguese chrono 371446 is stated on some sites as having a deployment clasp rather than pin buckle.
The Portuguese 3714 was my first IWC and has not had any problems with shirt cuffs whether single or double nor has my Pilot Chrono 3717. The only issue is cheap shirts with slim cuffs that leave little room for today's large sized watches.
I do not see why either would not be a great first buy of your selection although when the Mk XVII hits the retailers I do not know.

    They're very different watches.

The Mark XVII is less formal but will still work well with a suit. The 3714 is more formal but will still work well with casual wear.

The Mark XVII has a date complication but is not a chronograph. The 3714 has a chronograph complication but does not show the date.

I'd have a tough time choosing between the two as my first IWC. I'd probably lean toward the Mark XVII since I've found a date to be more useful to me than a chronograph (although I have several), and the Mark XVII generally fits my lifestyle a bit better. (But whichever one I chose, I'd probably buy the other as soon as I could manage.)

In some ways it's what we call a "high class problem": you basically can't make a wrong choice.

Being new to the forum I think it's great to have this knowledge available. I note from reading through the articles that so many owners have picked the 3714 as their first purchase and so many are also fans of the Pilot range.I know now that I can't go wrong with either one.
    Thanks for the advice.
    Sean.
