I'm a new IWC owner, and I'm interested in some of the celebs that wear IWCs, both officially or not. Does anyone have any info? The new Beckham acquisition from Breitling rather changed the dynamic of their image, in my opinion.

The most famous one in my opinion is Boris Becker. I don't know if there is an official list of the top-1000 most famous people (and in what region of the world they are famous), but to me most other ambassadors are not super famous. But they may be chosen because of other merits, like maybe what they stand for.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

hmm...let's see. Off the top of my head:

    Adriana Lima
    Ellie McPherson
    Karolina Kurkova
and a few dozen more friends...

    Here's another Ambassador...

Mrs. Andy Stevens, for allowing her husbund to collect IWC's while her kitchen remodel is put on the back burner.

    Thanks for supporting IWC,

    Andy

Yes, I recognise that one. With some lead in my shoes, but confident by experience, I once in a while ask my facilitator if that kitchen shouldn't be reniewed. I would like that if I were a frequent kitchen user. But her answer is still a firm NO. A new kitchen and a new watch could go together, though, as long as the watch (or the kitchen) is no Siderale...

    Kind regards,
    Paul

Cate Blanchett, Adriana Lima, Kevin Spacey...

    Then, there's Cate Blanchett...

    Then...

Did I say Cate Blanchett already?

    LOL!

Nice picture, Shing. But who are they, and what made them famous? So, of course I show that I am not a part of the target group to be impressed by these kind of celebrities. Cheaply, I am rather impressed by beautiful, perfect watches. To show that I am not a cave man: where is that world famous Dutch violinist Janine Jansen? Or the worlds best baduk player, Korean Lee Sedol? But of course, sadly, both classical music and go (baduk, weiqi), although millions of people are active in these fields, are not representing the target group. What that target group is, I am not sure, and I don't care. I like watches, too.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

OK, nice. I suppose I was also asking, what is it about them that makes them IWC ambassadors, and do you agree with the choices?
For example, Roger Federer, as the Rolex Ambasaddor, is excellent. Understated, reliable, classy, exceptioanal.
Who, in your mind, should be an IWC Ambassador?

I don't believe IWC has any "ambassadors" in the same sense that other brands do? As far as I know, Kevin Spacey is still only considered a Friend of the brand? And he's probably the closest thing to an ambassador that IWC has.

I do remember reading somewhere that David deRothschild was(is) an IWC ambassador?

Liked your high quality comment very much Paul...I think you speak on behalf of many...I am not so sure how this photo for example should help sell more watches...I think it's the Swiss quality that people are looking for, the in-house movement, the long-standing tradition and special history of IWC...having said this...who is Adriana Lima...???

Sorry, I cannot stop myself, it is too funny. After seeing some great six nations rugby on the BBC there is a show there with the name "Pointless celebrities". Yes, it is silly, I apologise.

    Kind regards,

In my opinion IWC hasn't any ambassadors. I think that those all of people are just "friend of Schaffhausen" which are invited on all of events and just love IWC watches.
You forgot about Evan McGregor-one of flagship friends now. He play in "The Imposible", film which You can watch in cinema now...beautiful story! I saw it today.

It seems to me that Rolex needs ambassadors; IWC does not. While Rolex has a few classic designs, i.e. the Submariner and the Daytona, I really do not think of them as among the top watch companies when you look at craftsmanship and innovation. They need the ambassadors because they are more about marketing than watchmaking.

I was attracted to IWC precisely because of their no-nonsense reputation for exceptional watchmaking. Their watches are beautifully functional. I think IWC most closely follows the van der Rohe dictum of form following function. I suspect most IWC wearers are of like mind. Having a celebrity endorse the product really does not change my opinion of the watch. Knowing that Kevin Spacey and Ewan McGregor like IWCs makes me think they have good taste, but for me, it is the image of IWC that reflects well on them rather than the other way around.

' Knowing that Kevin Spacey and Ewan McGregor like IWCs makes me think they have good taste, but for me, it is the image of IWC that reflects well on them rather than the other way around '.

Cardcat..I can only presume you overlooked the fact both the gentlemen you mentioned are paid-monies professional actors, I doubt Mr. Spacey was around when the Schaffhausen brand was revered for being 'understated' (specially looking at how he wears a wristwatch on his wrist/hand).

Plenty of known celebrities collect Rolex watches from thier own volition....to no fanfare, i know for a fact they know thier ref's (lots that can be got free of charge don't intrest them in the least) and have done since pre the mid '90's...i doubt very much the paid mob above had heard of Schaffhausen back then.

Forme isn't really following function when customers are smashing thier own goods into coffee tables and door frames..charging them a premium for making a model in ceramic to circumnavigate this.. is'nt really high art.
