I loved the Big Pilot LPP when Nad posted the pictures of what I think was the first one in the world. I loved it when I bought what was claimed by the Boutique to be the first one to enter the US. And I love it still. I think the strap is a great match for the watch and looks terrific.

Nevertheless, I have long wondered what the watch would look like on a bracelet. I generally prefer sporty watches on bracelets, dressy watches on straps. I felt the beautiful blue dial would contrast perfectly with an appropriate steel bracelet. But how would I ever know for sure?

I contacted Tracy (“Kokoro”) who apparently some time ago modified some end links on a bracelet to fit one of his Big Pilots. Tracy was very helpful but I didn’t want to risk an expensive bracelet and didn’t have what would be needed to attempt a modification.

I have seen quite a few aftermarket mesh bracelets, but I doubted whether the fine mesh would be a good match for the massiveness of the BP, especially given the bold font used on the LPP version. Finally I found what seemed to be worth a shot, at least to test the look. This “Breitling Style” bracelet has solid links that I feel are better matched than mesh to a pilot watch . I wish all links were brushed rather than a combination of brushed and polished, but that can be easily remedied.

We IWC fans are accustomed to fitted end pieces on bracelets. That’s not possible for an aftermarket bracelet, and this has straight ends. But that is how our straps come, and Breitling successfully employs this design on pilot watches, so maybe….

Hey! Look who we can see in the reflection!

The bracelet has a push button double deployant design, which I generally find more comfortable than the foldover single deployant styles.

Well, what do you think of the look?

OK, let me “fess up”. This is an inexpensive aftermarket bracelet. Really inexpensive. It cost a whole USD $70 !!! While the label on the package says “Richard Eichmuller” and gives a street address in Munich, the website from which I bought it was honest in saying it was made in China. Gee, for $70, who would have guessed?

It is quite hefty and I think the design and mass are well suited to the watch, though as I said, I wish all the links were brushed rather than some polished. It remains to be seen how durable the deployant clasp is and how well it remains closed. Clearly the biggest cost cutting and weakest point is the pin system with which the links are fastened together and through whose removal the bracelet is sized. They’re really bad. But it is not my point to review the bracelet. Who would wear a $70 bracelet on a $16,000 watch? I was at least willing to invest $70 to test the look, and this thing may surprise me yet.

Based on this trial, I sure wish IWC would offer a bracelet for the Big Pilot. So what do you guys think of it?

I think every Big Pilot can do with a bracelet. The best would be a Spitfire Chrono bracelet look alike, that is, made specifically for the Big Pilot, matching the brushed or polished parts of the watch. The bracelet you show comes close, but to me not close enough: you just can see it is not of the same quality as the bracelet of the Spitfire Chrono. But you can see that a bracelet is a very good idea for a Big Pilot, I am sure IWC could do well by offering one.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

I cannot warm up with this one.
Generally spoken one could imagine a BP on a bracelet. But then it had to be IWC quality.
But I prefer this one on brown or blue leather strap.

I have to say that I'm not completely sold on a bracelet for the BP. This one looks nice but it would have to be a high-quality IWC bracelet to really work. I guess I also am not a big fan of the Spitfire bracelet - I prefer a more solid bracelet with larger links along the lines of the Ingenieur or Aquatimer bracelets. As for this particular watch, I do think a strap looks best. I love what Paul (Sunflower) had written several weeks ago:

"The colour combination of dial and strap is special and beautiful to me, sporty in a delicate way. Like a pullover in the colour of the dial, and the trousers in the colour of the strap."

I just love the analogy of the pullover and the trousers. Some here do like the look of a blue strap for this watch but to me the brown is really nice (and wears well) and compliments the dial beautifully. I see a nice balance and think it is too much to go all blue, but that is my personal opinion. I think the stainless steel look is even a little more balanced than the all-blue with the blue strap. I would, in the end, be interested to see a nice bracelet made specifically for the Big Pilot in general.

    I second that 100%!

dick, thanks for these photos. interesting to see the BP on a bracelet. not my cup of tea, but i do think there's a bit of a demand for them and i would have thought IWCs creative team could come up with a clever twist on the leather strap with rivets - that's made out of steel! kind of like a carbon fiber strap that has visual hints echoing the rivets - there's certainly something unique that could be designed. have a rough idea and i'd do it if i had the free time on my hands =P anyways, just my two cents. regards, thang

    Aloha Dick -

I've been advocating a bracelet for the Big Pilot since 2008 when I posted this parody Watch magazine cover.

I think that a Big Pilot bracelet should match the bracelets in the current pilot watch lineup.

Here are a few more pictures.

I'm a big fan of the original strap. Not 100% sure about the bracelet although the wrist shot actually looks quite good. I think I would personally stick with the strap. That Watch Magazine mock up does look quite good too.

    Cheers,

    Jarrod

I agree with you Tracy. I'd love an IWC look and quality bracelet. The problem is, it doesn't exist for the BP. Yet.

Your version looks great. I'd be one of the first in line if it were offered!

    Dick,
I think the bracelet looks fine. Gives the watch a whole new look. I suspect some of the responses might be different if the bracelet was made by IWC.

Not a real surprise, given that an IWC bracelet costs up near $2000 and this one was $70.

If there were an IWC bracelet available, I'd be on it. Or rather, it would be on me!

Still, it does give the watch a different look that would be a practical "summer switch." I do like the blue dial contrasted with the silver bracelet.

This is just the way I see it too.
The wonderful blue dial is complemented in a perfect manner by this brown buffalo strap.

Love it Dick, looks great, with an IWC bracelet it would definitely have a weight to it - you would know it was on your wrist!
