Now, blue dials are independently to any material.

But is it the same blue today ?

One could argue that the environmental cost paid by using platinum in watches is too higher price to pay and no company that pays lip service to sustainability should be producing platinum watches.

One could also argue that platinum is an inappropriate metal for watch cases because it is too soft with a 95% purity.

I have no regrets about owning a platinum doppel. Platinum blue dials are rare and special but, as an owner of a blue dial Yacht Club and someone who would love to own a blue sunburst 866, I am not sure that blue dials were ever reserved exclusively for platinum watches at IWC.

That Pt Mark XII is a beauty.

For a period of time in the late '90s and early 2000s, blue dials were reserved by IWC for platinum cases. In 2002, I wrote an article extolling the virtues of this, which can be found by clicking here.

Great article Michael. Really enjoyed it.
The Blue is a strong favorite of mine and I am glad that it made its way into the stell case families as well.

Certain members here have been clamoring for more steel blue dial watches. LOL And in the last few years our request has been answered. As MF said back then they are fun, regal and sporty. I would hope that these thoughts apply even if the metal is steel.
Sorry to be so obsessive about this. Some are obsessed with military watches, others Big Pilots, yet others Pocket Watches or vintage models. More power to us all.

And Alan if I may add, no matter what the obsession, we all share one thing in common....the passion.

Talking about the blue dial, does the 354806 blue dial share the same blue as LYC sunburst dial? If not, any IWC shared the same blue as this AT?

I must say the blue dial that Hebe shared is really a class of it own.
