    Hello -
    I have a relatively new Aquatimer chronograph (blue/blue)that I'm really enjoying (my first IWC). I know mechanical watches should not be placed in strong magnetic fields. My question is, does a cell phone generate enough electromagnetic energy to affect a watch in close vicinity - say, next to each other on a dresser, etc.? Thanks.

    No --not in my experience. You shouldn't have a problem.

    I think if a cell phone generated a strong enough field to affect a mechanical watch then it would also disturb it's own chips. Unless, of course, it had a soft iron cage built-in. ;-)

    Soft Iron cage - Maybe that's why it's called a CELL phone ;-)

    Well, the Cell Phone transmitter frequencies are about 400 MHz up to 2 GHz.
    These are electromagnetical fields, NOT magnetic fields !

    But if you have activated the internal vibrator, the vibrator works with a motor that emits a magnetic field, if the vibrator works.

    Many magnetic stripes of credit cards have been and still are destroyed by this effect !

    AND many cell phone covers include permanent magnets for the closing mechanism. Another problem !

    So, don´t place your watch on your cell phone :-)
