    Hello,
I am currently in the market for a new watch, and some of the IWCs struck me as beautiful watches. I am looking for a sporty chronograph with an open/partial open display back. I have searched the website hoping to find something, but to no avail.

Am I completely out of luck, or is there a model that has these features? I found a portuguese model with an open back, however that struck me as more dressy than sporty. I really like the look of IWCs but not being able to see the movement is a big thing for me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I was looking at photos of that model, and had a tough time figuring out if the watch was trying to appeal to the wear around the office crowd, or the outdoor weekender crowd...I guess it could technically go either way depending on what color/strap you get. I really like the three dial look with the chronographs, but its good to know this model is out there.

Ideally I was hoping to find a pilot watch chrono with the display back, but can see thats not happening, at least not with the current lineup on the website.

    Thanks again for the response.

I suspect the Portuguese Yacht Club ref IW390209 is the watch you're referring to. I think that's a sporty model. Ingenieurs, Pilots and Aquatimers are more sporty, so to speak, and should not, in my view have display backs. Pilots should be antimagnetic (as should Ingenieurs in my opinion) while the Aquatimers should have the appropriate design for diving. I think there was a discontinued gold Aquatimer chronograph in the recent past which may fit the bill.

Too bad there are no manual wind chronographs with display backs in the IWC Catalog. Just look at the ALS manual wind chronograph (or even some Omega Speedmasters) and you will see what I mean.

ALS manual wind double split chronograph (web pic). Notice the IWC Santoni strap?

For the record there were also two limited editions (100pces) from the portuguese line, chronograph models.

-Tribute to Japan 1997 (pic 3)
Both of them with a sapphire display at the back.

I second the suggestion of the Yachtclub. It's a sporty chronograph with a rubber strap but you can swap it for a leather strap which will give it a more dressy look.

Here's my Yachtclub in Rose Gold.
