    Good morning all -

I am very interested in the IWC doppelchronograph 3711 for all the reasons people have previously described. First gen of the split second innovation, domed crystal, and T dial. I know the watch is 42mm diameter and 16mm thick - seems like big watch and was wondering how it compares in size to my Speedmaster. Does anyone here own both and can share how the IWC wears? My Speedmaster feels perfect so I think the IWC should be close.

    I appreciate any input!

    Hi there
3711 is a classic and wears very well (I'm talking from my experience of 3706 though), and if anything, might wear a bit small. It will compliment a Speedmaster very well, which on the wrist actually appears smaller than it is.

Due to the domed shape of its bottom the 3711 sits noticably higher on the wrist than the Speedmaster, you might have to get used to this a bit. I find the 3711 a bit more top-heavy with the leather strap, and while the steel bracelet is a good "counterweight" it will add significantly to the total weight.
The 3711 is a real milestone in IWC history and represents many aspects the Speedmaster does not cover: domed sapphire vs. plexi, double chrono vs. single chrono, automatic vs. handwinding, etc.
Seems like it will be a very good addition to your collection.

For those who would like a picture, here's my 3711. It wears very comfortably on the bracelet, imo.

The domed crystal; not easy to photograph.

The force is strong with this one. Will likely be the first watch of 2016 for me :)

Success! There is a 1993 ref. 3711 coming my way via Germany soon. The serial number dates to 1993 and the caseback looks totally unmarked - perhaps it is unserviced and completely originally? Very excited for this incoming piece. The more I researched this reference the more fascinated I have become with 1990's IWC. Between the triumvirate of Blumlein, Klaus, and Habring, acquisition of Jaeger & ALS, and formation of LMH - all terrific history for the brand and watch industry. Through this purchase I'm an even bigger IWC fan than before and can't wait to examine this piece. Expect more photos of this 3711 compared with a 145.022-71 Speedmaster, new Ingenieur 3239, Navitimer 806, and 1969 Seiko Speedtimer.

Few questions I am looking for help with:
    1. I read that the ref. 3711 was first made in 1991; however, the earliest reference number I've seen online is in the 2,55X,XXX series that dates to 1993 (using DateyourIWC). Does anyone have an earlier serial number or can show photos?
    2. Will all 21mm IWC steel bracelets fit a ref. 3711? My 3711 cames on strap and I will eventually look for a correct bracelet but I'm wondering if other 21mm bracelets will work - like the one on the 3777.
    3. Does IWC have replacement domed crystals? Mine appears fine, but wondering what happens in case a replacement is eventually needed.

Thanks for your interest and responses!

I think the 3777 bracelet will not fit while the 3717 bracelet might. (Case sizes are a tad different.)
I find my 3706 the perfect size regarding both diameter and height so the Doppel might be a bit too large for my 6.75" srist - my two cents only.
    (42x16.2 vs. 39x14.6 mm)
The Doppel might fit better than the Speedy though, regarding the more steep lug shape.

Der Doppel has landed and it is awesome! Wanted to share a few observations since it arrived yesterday. My Speedmaster is the "benchmark" of my collection and my basis for comparison:
    1. Doppel is a large and thick watch - but not too much and I am enjoying wearing it. Makes my Speedmaster feel small.
    2. Even though the case sizes have similar diameters, Doppel's face/dial show larger since there isn't a bezel.
    3. Classic Flieger look - is the 3711 the first modern reference to include IWC Pilot design cues since the Mark XI? I think the Mark XII and 3705/3706 were released after the 3711.
    4. The domed crystal is in perfect condition and really connects & shows as a vintage/retro watch. Definitely prefer it to the flat crystal like the 3713.
    5. Purposefully built tool watch. So precisely milled and construction and makes my Speedmaster almost appear flimsy. I like how this watch looks stoic and unapologetically mature/serious.

I will share more thoughts after wearing a bit longer and do more side by side comparisons to the Speedmaster. Will start looking for an appropriate strap - any recommendations? I have already sourced a correct bracelet (now THAT is another seriously built piece of equipment and could review it all by itself).

Have a great weekend and thanks for reading!
