Was this the first IWC wristwatch with a moon phase complication ? So many moon phase complications around here now, but when did it start ?

This is my only moon phase watch yet. Would be glad, if it was the FIRST one :-)

And I think, it is the cheapest :-)

    Regards

    Heiko

The Giant Portofino Moonphase in 1982 is my guess.

I do not know for sure - but I am guessing that this Portofino would be earlier than the Porsche design compass...

That compass/moonphase is a very cool watch. Congrats.

Perhaps Ref. 3550? I am not sure if this >

is before, during, or after the Ref. 3551.

    Probably not the 3551

The catalogue of PD watches from 1984 shows, that the only
compass watch available at this time was the 3550 (compass
watch without moon phase, bracelet and case made from
    aluminium).
The next catalogue I have is from 1987 where the 3551 is
listed but the the 3550 disappeared and it seems that at
this time the bracelet material was changed to Delrin.

So if the Portofino was introduced in 1982, then the 3551
is most probably not the first moonphase wrist watch
    of IWC.

    Cheers, Toby

    Probably not the 3551

Thank you for this update Tobias,

so, the 3551 could be ONLY the first AUTOMATIC with MOON PHASE.

    Greetings

    Heiko

Portofino moonphase was the first complicated IWC

Portofino moonphase was the first complicated IWC wristwatch I believe. So by definition, also the first with a moonphase.
