    Hi all:

New to the IWC family but have been collecting watches for awhile.
Moon phase complications are a special favorite of mine.

Wanted to share photos of my new acquisition:
The Portugieser Perpetual 5021-11 in platinum.

This watch is amazing with a unique double moon phase, unapologetic modern size, and a ridiculously long power reserve. I generally don't buy used watches but my understanding is that this was a limited run model that could no longer be sourced new; fortunately, this watch lived its entire former life in a safe so decided to take the plunge.

I really could not be more impressed. I don't see many IWCs in the wild, but recently meet a gentleman with a Portuguese automatic and was struck by the case proportions and the solid look.

This led me to investigate the Portugieser watch family in more detail. Wanted a double moon phase complication and considered the cobalt blue version with an updated calibre, but the color scheme of this model is more in keeping with my other watches and completes my collection in a very specific way.

Wrist Shot; amazing reflective hue and glow in person...

Taking it out for a spin; it needed some sunlight and fresh air...

Up-close; Manual wind upstart with the PowerReserve now a bit beyond 7. No watch winder will ever be needed. Yesterday was a full moon and a small slit on the moon phase dials is now present.
    [i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac291/jake_williams10/IWC/IMG_6186_zps45kedo1e.jpg](s909.photobucket.com/user/jake_williams10/media/IWC/IMG_6186_zps45kedo1e.jpg.html)

The back; beautiful exposition case with a take no prisoners rotor.
    [i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac291/jake_williams10/IWC/IMG_6187_zps2hpsko1o.jpg](s909.photobucket.com/user/jake_williams10/media/IWC/IMG_6187_zps2hpsko1o.jpg.html)

All in all, this a modern and yet classic perpetual calendar. It is refreshing to see watch proportions both balanced and uncluttered.

I am interested in learning more about the production date; can that be determined somehow from the serial number??

    Thanks
    jcs

Congratulations. A very fine Portuguese you have - amazing.

I was obsessed with this 5021 in Platinum back in 2006-2007. The only one available I could find was for sale was offered at $62,000 USD and seller would not budge. My local Authorized IWC dealer had a Yellow Gold 5021, BRAND NEW for $17,000. Less than 3x the cost of the Plat - I took it.

Mine is an early 2003 model like yours. I can tell because your bridge is engraved "Sixty Six (66) Jewels" and I learned that none of these watches have 66 jewels. It's a mistake - the design of this caliber changed, using 64 jewels but after they already made 100+ bridges...rather than scrap them, the earlier watches made have the "66" bridges.

You can search the archives of this forum for some discussion on that.

Great watch, congratulations! As Ardoise, I have the yellow gold version, bought at Christmas 2003. It still functions flawlessly!

Enjoy your platinum version, that really has something special.

    Kind regards,

Thanks for all the comments. That is really interesting about the 66 vs 64 jewels in terms of dating. A quick note to Tonny because as the moderator he maybe able to correct an error in the thread--the title of "5022-11" is a typo, it is should actually be 5021-11.
