Brilliant idea. Thanks Alan!
I would definitively be interested and like the suggestions posted so far.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
I would even volunteer to go to Schaffhausen to look at design samples ;)

I'm definitely in for this enterprise and like the suggestions proffered. However, I would really love some nod toward affordability...I want to make sure I can own one!!!!
In order to achieve max. Interest and relevance we have to make it something to fit most. So it must be a medium size, maybe 42mm top, for those of us with a smaller wrist. Also, a mark xvi/xvii like watch will be hard to notice from the original models unless the dial will be of a different color. Maybe look at other LE's like the Italy Inge. And try to form one to suite the forum's taste.
First of all I would like to thank everyone who reported on the SIHH and uploaded pictures, it was a great week with great new watches introduced. i enjoyed following it on this forum!
I really like the idea of cf3 watch. To me the ardoise dial used on a steel watch would be great especially on the ss vc portugieser with international watch co. Written in full on the dial and name of owner inscripted on the movement.
I will follow the process with interest and agree with suggestions to present limited number of ideas in the near future hopefully supported by a some photoshop pictures.
Something like this?

Other options, keeping as main criterion (beside the entry level point) the in-house calibre or the taste for the novelty:

I don't think this particular watch is the best choice but.... I love your design on the back !!!
Hi All,
Being the year of the Pilot, I think this would absolutely have to be a CF Pilots watch, but which one . . . .
There seems to be a fair consensus for the Worldtimer - which I for one would agree with wholeheartedly.
However . . . A couple of others have mentioned it as well thou and I think a simple CF MKXVII would be great - it encompasses so many traditions from IWC yet is a simple, functional time piece that is part of a family that has immense heritage. I would love to see a CF MX XI but we all know that is not going to happen, so I think the MK XI's great great grandson would be a great choice - with an Ardoise dial, either the soft strap from the Mirimar or a one off Santoni Pilot CF strap and an engraving would make this a affordable yet special watch that I am sure we would all covet.
My 2 cents :)
Ben
Two other suggestions just for the fun of it:
First a simple one - blue dial version of the SS Vintage Pilot's watch using the hands and numerals from the WG version

And then a crazy one - take the new SS Spitfire chronograph and leave away both the date and chronograph functions. Replace the hands and dial with new ones like this
Should not be too difficult to make. Just don't drill the holes for chronograph pushers on the case. And if it is too much trouble to remove the unnecessary parts from the movement, just leave them there ;)
Wow, you know where my weak spots are: great watch!
Kind regards,
Paul
This post is superfluous, it can be deleted.
Well, that is a good argument for a Worldtimer.
I think this is a great idea!
I can see a slightly modified Flieger XVII or the Flieger World Timer watch as candidates for the Forum watch maybe the XVII as the most obvious choise due to the price factor.
If the World Timer can keep a reasonable low price level compared to other IWC's then I would opt for that one.

Man, what a post and discussion. I posted just before stepping on a plane and less than a day later it has generated so much discussion and interest.
On reflection after reading all posts; my choice shall be plain and simple -- the Worldtimer with a variation showcasing it as a special edition CF watch. Engraving at the back would be exquisite.
Catch u guys soon - jet lag and lunar new year festivities are keeping me real occupied this week.
Wow, I did not read the forum on Sunday and look what is there! A fantastic idea; Iam a classic guy, loving simple, clean, classic things; same about watches. Anyhow, what is important is that it is representing IWC style and affordable to the most, so SS. Engraving would be a nice cherry on the cake..

The CF2 apparently didn't sell well; whilst I don't know for sure the reasons I suspect it was a combination of price and a product line that is an acquired taste.
A modified Mark XVII, along the lines suggested by Clepsydra (Tony), would, I'm sure, sell out immediately. For me it would have to be non-date, black leather strap, perhaps a blue dial.
This combo really talks to me. Where do I sign?
Regards,
Kevin
My vote goes for something traditional: The dial and blued Losange Pleins hands of the Ref. 431 combined with the case and movement (less date) of the Ref. 3265 (Mk XVII). Simple caseback with: IWC/Schaffhausen, CF III, S/N and, LE Nr.

Cheers from Isobars.
Dear Alan,
An excellent suggestion. Can we have a day-date in 40-42 mm size.
Count me in for sure.
This is the year of the pilots, so we could go in for that. Else if this will take time, maybe something to celebrate the new year 2013 & showcase at the SIHH 2013.
By the way, 2013 will be the year of .....
