    Greetings,

We’ve all known Georges as IWC’s dynamic CEO –and indeed he’s really revitalized IWC with many exciting new models, factory expansion, marketing initiatives and other projects. He’s also done an especially good job in steering IWC through a very difficult economic environment.

Richemont has recently tapped Georges for some additional roles –he will serve as an advisor to two other Richemont watch companies: Baume Mercier and Roger Dubuis. He’s technically not “running” these companies but will help them develop and implement strategies given the current market conditions. In the instance of Dubuis, this makes particular sense since their CEO was Georges’ former right-hand man (and technically Chief Operating Officer) at IWC.

I’ve been assured that these roles don’t mean that Georges will be any less active at IWC. He still will be CEO and, especially for those on the inside, he’s an absolute hands-on manager in every respect. But I do guess that getting his attention –or even another interview on this forum— in the short term might be a little harder to achieve. ;)

At the same time, Jerome Lambert, who is CEO of Jaeger LeCoultre, will assume a similar consulting role with Lange & Söhne.

There are also rumors at Richemont as to who will succeed Norbert Platt, who is resigning as head of the fine watch group at Richemont. Some think that Georges' “move” relative to Baume Mercier and Dubuis is a foreshadowing that he’ll replace Norbert. Georges has denied it, and personally I’m not sure that will occur regardless. But –these are changing times in the industry. And for all watch companies there are challenges, which I personally consider to be opportunities. At least for the right executives.

    Regards,
    Michael

    Re: Georges Kern’s added responsibilities

    Michael,

This is interesting but not surprising news.

Georges Kern, as you well described, has proven his talents and now seems to be heading in a similar direction as the late Gunter Blumlein who juggled his responsibilities between IWC, JLC, and Lange.

I think it only makes sense to have some sort of central coordination where the multiple brands inside the Richemont group fit and that they do not overlap in the market place with the same products. A good leader does not necessarily need to have hands-on management but always must have an excellent team who can carry on an agreed to strategy.

I take this opportunity to wish Richemont and Mr. Kern continued success during these tough times. Good planning now for the future is essential to ensure the success of the company in the years ahead.

    Regards,
    Jack Freedman

My sincere Congratulations to Mr. Kern and best wishes for his further achievements.

Thank you Michael for this organizational note.

IWC will remain on top of my attention and special in many ways, with or without Mr Kern, even if, since I am a real estimator of his talents, I hope he will take care of IWC for many years to come.

    Regards,

    Roberto

    Best Congrats to Mr.Georges Kern

Very nice from you Michael, to keep us updated on theses changes.

Its a non common activity to keep informed people following the company about changes, people managing and implementing strategies.

Best wishes to Mr kern. He will for sure keep growing IWC and his extensive experience will add important value to these two other brands.

It will be interesting to see not only ...

... his contribution to Baume Mercier and Roger Dubuis but also what strategies and ideas he brings back to IWC.

    Best wishes Georges.

    Glückwünsche, Herr Kern

I hope I used the correct German for Congratulations. My German is a bit rusty. We all wish you, IWC and Richemont the best. Your success is our success.

He has his work cut out for him....

I never understood the allure of Roger Dubuis. Maybe someone can enlighten me. And Baume & Mercier is a watch I have never seen on anyone's wrist. I have been to a lot of watch functions, dinners GTGs and I cannot remember seeing even one of these.
So maybe it will take up an inordinate amount of his time to get these brands in line and profitable.

    One big (hopefully happy) family

and while we all appreciate the efforts of Mr Kern at IWC, it is easy to see how someone of his abilities would be an asset in other areas of the organisation. Let's hope for a happy ending for all concerned.
    Viel Glück!
