I've never heard of the Mohs rating for a surface covering, as opposed to a mineral in itself. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness characterizes the scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a harder material to scratch a softer material.

Because all coatings are thin, they all can be relatively easily scratched. But to my knowledge, IWC also coats the inside of their crystals and that's not easy to access by external objects.

Hi Michael,i understood.I did have several watches with outside AR,Omega-Bell&Ross,Breitlling,Sjoo Sandstrom, etc, and all did scratch after some months of use.I see that Sinn U1,U2 have a AR coating with 1800 Vickers of hardness.I did not buy this watch because is too big for my wrist,so i did buy Mark XVI and i am very happy with this watch. Why i ask about the hardness of AR coating used in IWC?I use my Mark XVI for several months and the AR is 100% perfect and no micro scratch,i did use my microscope and i did not see any scratch after months of use.I think that AR used in IWC is very hardness, because this i did ask about tha hardness in Vickers scale.Sorry my bad english.Thank you for your help me.

As soon as Bill Barker comes back he should be able to shed some light on this.
