    Hi,

I've just bought this watch and I'd like to learn more about it. Do you think it is original? What does S.T stand for?

    Any information is helpful!

    ST = Swiss Timing?

Actually I have no idea, never saw this before.

But your beautiful IWC looks very authentic to me, in- and outside too.

    Congrats!

The watch looks reet enough BM..though the dial looks re-done and so ST could simply be on the whim of the customer.

On the first glance the watch seems to be an IWC for sure and nothing special.

But there may be work for the specialists:

    - I think you can read C 855, which could be an improved version of the 854/8541. But I never heard of that.

    - The regulating part on the balance cock is not like in other cal 854, as it uses a micrometre regulation that was often used in pocket watch calibers. Other manufactures used similar systems in watch movements of high quality.

Maybe the caliber and the watch was a kind of prototype. As the caliber is engraved with c 855 I guess that this work was done by IWC and not in later years.

A closer look in the IWC archive of calibers would be helpful.

I am sorry for my misreading. So this is an ordinary cal 853.

So it rests just the dial to give a hint for the "S.T". The distance between S and T is quite small, so the point is somehow pressed in between. Maybe Catherine is right here...

There have been others with S.T. dials but with the "Centenary" underneath.. These are later Ref 910A watches to celebrate the centenary of Samual Taylor P/L an Australian soap/deodorant manufacturer. The watch you have does not appear to be one of these, but as Catherine says likely a customer watch.

Samual Taylor had a series of brash "Uncle Sam" advertisments before being taken over by I think Giliette.

    Sorry I can't help futher.

    I'm off travelling again.

    Cheers from the cellar

With Greg's info in mind the redial may well have had a touch of officialdom ( customer clout) about it, someone somewhere always feels left out and the 853 could have been readed to placate the scream, with the someone not warranting a gold case ( not a centurion) and older stock purchasable favourably.

    • bizarrely i did think '70 when i first seen the o/p's dial...

    Thanks Greg.
