i genuinely cannot make my mind up between the big inge in SS with black croc strap or the port automatic in SS with blue croc strap.
i'm a big portuguese fan but i have no inges (yet).
    which one?

    Try image as decision criterion

Technically both are great watches, and the functions are about the same. You do not like the one above the other, or you wouldn't have asked, and the small difference in price is of no consequence to you.

The Portuguese is a bit dressier than the big Inge, which has a bit of sportier, louder image to me. Do you want or even need a watch of one of those types? What kind of a person are you? These kinds of questions may help you a bit. But if you really cannot decide, take my advise: wait, don't buy either of them. A watch should say to you: ram, bam, I'm yours.

    Kind regards,
Paul, wearing titan Inge Automatic (I knew instantly when I saw this watch and read about it that I wanted it)

    Well...Every Portugieser -Fan needs a

5444 Régulateur. I would get this one first, and look at the Inge AMG too.

    Best from Isobars.

In terms of Cal. 5xxxx automatic IWCs....

...I like the Ref. 5001 with siver dial as an extraordinarily versatile watch, plus the display back. I also like the Big Pilot's Watch --both ref. 5004 but especially the "older" ref. 5002--as a "quintessential" IWC.

To me, the Jumbo Ingenieur comes in third: it's a nice model but it doesn't have the versatility of the 5001 not the elan of the BPW. I also like some of the other Ingenieurs more (like the new Climate Action. But that's just me.

    Regards,
    Michael

He already has a Regulateur, and

...I think his real question centered on Cal. 5xxxx models.

    I imagine you will..........

eventually own both. But if you already have a Portuguese
family watch, get the Big Ingenieur, and keep the White Port
on your Wish List. Something we all have.
    Good Luck , Joe

Tough choice, they do serve different...

functions. As they have the same movement with a display back, it really comes down to which looks better on your wrist.
The nice thing about the big Ing. is a bracelet is an option. I have to admit it does look rather nice with a bracelet.
The Port auto is a beautiful watch. An iconic IWC, if I ever seen one.
I would try both of them on and buy the one that smiles at you.
    Good luck.

    Between these two

my suggestion to you is to continue with your Portuguese focus (for now) and go for the IW500107 instead of the Big Ingenieur

    Not anwering your question.....
If you are widening your horizons other than these two choices and thinking of the Cal 5xxxx movements then a Big Pilot would be a wildcard suggestion.

Perhaps a PRT in white gold would be my other bonus wildcard suggestion.

    A certain risk is involved..

I would recommend the Portuguese Automatic as this watch is a IWC style icon, a classical watch that will continue to look modern in 20 years. The only risk you face is that your girlfriend / wife wants to wear that watch! And this watch looks great on a tender wrist.

    Tough question...

I love both the Big Ingenieur and the Portuguese Automatic. The Big Inge didn't fit my wrist well so I got the Port Auto (white dial). Later, I got the 'regular' Inge (3227) and these two watches easily get 80% of the wrist time. From these two, I wear the Inge most.

The Portuguese Automatic gets most of the compliments and there are very few people that understand my love for the Inge...

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

Don't know Stephen's collection, so I would focus

    on the Inges.

    Tough question...

    Cinq,

In the past, you have mentioned that thr Inge is your favourite watch. Can you describe why you like it better than the Port. I know that what I am asking is subjective but want to hear your opinion.

    Thanks,

    AJ

    Another tough question!

    Hi AJ,

What I like about the Inge is that it is rugged, magnetically shielded, has a good water resistance rating, has a superb bracelet and a great dial. Another reason is that I am an 'Ingenieur' myself (biochemics, although I work in IT right now) and that's about it I guess.

I also like the fact that it is a rather stealthy watch. There are few people who recognize it and understand the true value of it. Not as much money-wise but more from the technical point of view.

This morning, I was thinking about putting the Port Auto on my wrist but I finally chose the Ingenieur. That makes it 3 days in a row :-)

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

    Another tough question!

Thank you. Very valid points. The Inge is truly a beautiful watch! But I also love your Port Automatic. At this point, I am waiting for my new 3714 to arrive. Sometimes I wonder whether I should have gone for the 5001 instead?

    Kind regards,

    AJ

    thanks guys

after taking all your advice in i am going to go for the portuguese automatic. i think it will be more versatile and with the blue strap it can be worn with jeans or a suit.
