    Hello to all,

New member to this forum and fairly new to the world of mechanical timepieces, a friend pointed me to this site whilst searching for information on an IWC cal. 89 movement that is in my newly acquired watch, so i thought i had better say hello to you all before i start asking any questions.

I have a very small collection, and much prefer a vintage piece to the newer styles and do prefer a manual wind, so the cal. 89 is perfect for me. (but i do have questions)

Anyway glad to be here and now to find out how to post pictures with questions.

    Graham.

    Graham,
Welcome to the best place on the web to discuss non commercial aspects of IWC watches. We have many knowledgable contributors who are eager and happy to share their thoughts. So ask away!
    Regards,
    Kevin

PS if you have a question about a specific watch it always helps to post a picture. You can do a search of the site for directions on how to do this.

    Thanks for the welcome Kevinj.

I have recently purchased a vintage IWC and from my searches on the web i cant find another similar to mine that only has 2 hands, so my question is, should my calibre 89 have the 3rd sweeping second hand. Also would i be right in saying this is from 1949 ?

    Hopefully the pictures appear below.

    Hi Graham,
Welcome to the forum, and a very special welcome from a collector of vintage IWC. Making mine Kevin's words, ask away. This is the right forum to deal with IWC watches, vintage or modern. Someone will have an answer to your questions.

Clearly the seconds hand is missing. Date Your IWC software dates it from circa 1950.

    Thanks Clepsydra,

My next question then is, where can i get one from and any specs needed to find the right type/shape.

    Hi Footycrazy,

    Welcome!

On your seconds hand, some watchmakers might have one that "looks right". But also your crystal appears incorrect --too high and too much of a bubble look-- and you might want to replace that too. Or if you have the time and money IWC in Schaffhausen can make your watch look like new.

You can search the archives here (upper right magnifying glass) for photos of other calibre 89s for comparison. Also Google "IWC Vintage Catalog Project" for the old catalogs.

Thank you, most helpfull. Sadly funds will not allow for a full restoration but thanks for the info.

Welcome to the forum, I'd save up for what's called the spa treatment, you will love the end result.

Here is a picture of my Cal 89, which is one of the more accurate and consistent time keepers in my collection. You can see the style of the seconds hand quite clearly. I tend to prefer large diameter IWC's, hence my wife wears this one proudly most of the time.

I concur with Greg, when you have the funds, send your cal 89 to Schaffhausen for a spa treatment. It will come back like new.

It does not need, nor imho should have a full restoration. It is a beautiful watch from the 50s, and it should only be brought back to its original condition. The full spa treatment is very expensive, frequently more expensive than the watch proper, and advisable only on extreme cases, imho.
All it really needs is the proper hands and glass, and an IWC thin alligator strap. You can send it to Schaffhausen for that. It will not be cheap but you will not have to take a second mortgage. Any competent watchmaker can overhaul the movement.

Thanks chaps, i think for now i will have a new crystal and hand set fitted. I would love the Spa treatment in the future maybe.
Really appreciate your advice and knowledge on this one. I will stick around for all the excellent information on this forum and hopefully i might learn a thing or two, if only i had known these things before i had bought it.

Still we learn something new every day.
As that subject is now closed for now, i thoought i would post a few quick pics of my others. so Here goes....

Welcome, and all nice watches. I agree with your call - get the second hand re-installed and a correct crystal on that watch and it will be one of the nicest vintage watches in your collection.

IWC's are absolutely great to collect and I would vouch a wager that this wont be your first and only IWC in the collection.

    Best regards
    Mark
