I have been pondering a hypothetical scenario in my head for a few days now and thought I would try and get your views on the matter.

Say you would run into €20.000 (=28k USD; 16k GBP; 200k HKD) tomorrow and by some strange coincidence you could only spend it on IWC watches.

Which watch(es) would you buy and why?

Note: The 20.000 is just a guideline so we don't get "Siderale Scafusia" from everyone, if you have a good reason to buy a 21.000 euro watch, please let me know and of course why.

Hmm. I don't know if I can narrow it to a single watch in the abstract. Would need to try a bunch on and see what struck me at that particular time. Some that I would seriously consider: platinum VC Inge or VC AT (no idea what they cost), black dial Yacht Club, Spitfire 3878, Portuguese Hand-wound. If allowed to go vintage, a Ref 812 or a Ref 5000. Oh, and a bunch of Santoni straps.

Please consider this my entry form to win said funds.

The original fried egg Portofino + full spa and Santoni short light brown strap. Hopefully there will enough for dinner for two afterwards in our hi-day local restaurant. Cheque for funds to purchase the above will be very very gratefully welcome. If the cheque was say three times that then same as above plus Portuguese perpetual in Platinum or yellow or pink gold, but not red. Nice dream though.

I'd put down a deposit on a lovely Portuguese minute repeater in Rose Gold.

Make that plus 1 for me. The platinum VC AT is stunning.

I had a similar thought but in my case it would probably be the white gold with blue dial. Does IWC have a layaway plan?

For that amount, I would purchase the Portuguese 500106. The white gold case with a beautiful ardoise dial has always appealed to me, and I think it embodies the essence of an elegant Portugueser.

Well, it's not quite enough for a blue 5032, but I could sell something else to make up the difference.

    A Deep One and a Portuguese 2000.
    Or a Jubilee and a ref.3227.

I don't have the list prices handy but I am thinking about a Portofino handwound in red gold. That will probably leave little budget for anything else.

    Kind regards,

Well, I'm following the same reasoning as Alan - I would definitely get a PPC white gold w/ blue dial and just to keep in the spirit, sell something to cover the difference.

    Cheers!

When not having the watches I own now, I would buy the two watches that I wore the last two days: the Spitfire Chrono on steel bracelet for the refined sporty conditions, and the steel white dial Portofino 8 Days Handwound for the refined dressy conditions. What else do you need?

    Kind regards,
    Paul

Paul, what else do you need?! Never enough watches is the motto of our world traveller Nad, it's something I would agree wholeheartedly with!

+1 for me too (assuming you were strictly limited to using those funds only)
