What a great idea! By the way, I believe Herr Klaus' birthday will be this coming Friday.

I have so many recollections of meetings with Kurt Klaus that it's difficult to know where to begin.

When I went to Schaffhausen in 2001, as newly-appointed moderator of IWC's new forum, it was Herr Klaus who spend a lot of time with me, and we had dinner together.
He became a mentor, and I have been and am both fortunate and honored.

At one IWC event I was talking to Frau Klaus and she said "My husband is a very special man --he's always happy".

So, I'll contribute a few photos:

First, as a very young man --in 1939:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK7.jpg

And one of his real favorite activities, with his beloved Whippets:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK2.jpg
By the way, one was gravely ill last year, and I suspect is no longer here. As he told me, he understandably wasn't happy, for once.

I always viewed Herr Klaus as a student:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK3.jpg

    And as a visionary:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK5.jpg

And as mentor, not only to me. Here he is with Stephan Ihnen, now IWC's Technical Directior, when IWC first in-house chronograph movement debuted:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK4.jpg

And as a true friend of collectors --here we are in Hong Kong:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK8.jpg

But mostly I consider Kurt Klaus a friend:
    www.iwcforum.com/KK6.jpg
On this evening, he took off his lapel pin, depicting his original Da Vinci, and gave it to me.

He truly is a friend of all collectors. I recall once in Geneva he asked me what I was doing that evening. I said I'm having dinner --Sushi-- with a few collectors. He sheepishly asked "do you mind if I join"?.

In the 1990s, Günter Blümlein --then head of IWC and Lange, told me that some people called Herr Klaus "Einstein". I thought that would be a catchy name for an article and therefore wrote this for another site before I became moderator of this forum in 2001. I like to think that this article helped introduce Kurt Klaus a bit to a broader universe and helped solidify his nickname: click here

Herr Klaus, Alles Gute zum Geburtstag und geniesse den Tag!

Herr Klaus, ich wünsche Ihnen von Ganzem Herzen alles Gute zum Geburtstag, viel Gesundheit und Freude.

Dear Mr. Klaus, I hope I will have one day the honor to meet you in person. I want to thank you for giving me with your KK Da Vinci Perpetual so much joy every single time I look at it, and for reminding me with it of a loved family member which unfortunately is not anymore among us.

Very best wishes to Herr Klaus on his birthday. I have had the honour of meeting Kurt Klaus on several occasions. On each occasion it has been an absolute privilege to chat with him. I remember a lovely half hour Mrs E and I had with Herr Klaus over drinks. Self effacing, modest, welcoming, charming and entertaining are adjectives that come to mind. He is a genius and maestro who has made an immense contribution to the lives of all lovers of IWCs and will continue to do so for many more years to come.

    Happy birthday, Herr Klaus!

Unfortunately I cannot say that I've had the pleasure of meeting The Master in person, however the perpetual calendar on my wrist never fails to put a smile on my face as I reflect on the living legend who made it possible.

    Happy Birthday Kurt.

The first time I met you was in Geneva at the SIHH and I was absolutely stunned by your "generosity of time". At no moment did I feel I was bothering you at all with so many of my basic questions and I have learnt so much from you during the many (perhaps even into double figures now) times we have spent time together alone or in a group.

I hope to see you again very soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY and MANY HAPPY RETURNS.

I'm a little late to his party, but let me just say it is a distinct honor to know and have spent time with such a wonderful man as Mr. Klaus. His modesty and genius mix in a wonderful way, which is quite unique!

Happy belated Birthday, Herr Klaus. Thank you for what you have done to make IWC special.
