For my 5 year old 3717(spitfire chrono)with Valjoux 7750 movement, it runs at +5.46/day. Is this still "normal"? When it was still under warranty it was running a lot faster and i had to bring it to the service center, but after that adjustment it became like it is now. I brought in an AD in HK and they also said its normal and up to chronometer standards. How come my (a lot less expensive)Wenger watch with i believe also a valjoux movement runs better at just +1.15 seconds/day.

    Is +5.46 seconds/day normal?
    Yes.
The tolerances for your 3717 and most other IWC automatic or chrono watches are -2 to +7 seconds a day. The tolerances for COSC chronometers are larger at -4 to +6 seconds a day.
-2 to +7 seconds a day is, in theory, the maximum accepted variance but, in practice, a loss (the -2) is not generally accepted by IWC, either in production or after service. This, in reality, reduces the tolerance to 0 to +7 seconds a day.
Should an IWC be found to be loosing time, while under guarantee and without damage, it will normally be regulated without charge. Tighter regulation of a watch already within tolerances, when possible, requires a large amount of watchmaking time and can be expensive.

I would say that +5.46 seconds/day is not normal. First, nowhere is written that a watch should run +5.46 seconds/day, that would be a norm, and second, there are far more watches that don't run +5.46 seconds/day, most run faster or slower, so your watch belongs to a very small minority.

Should you be worried because of this? I don't think so. Certainly if you have several watches that you wear in rotation, you will probably set the time every time you will wear the watch. A constant +7 seconds/day would be the maximum I accept. Last year I had one watch regulated that ran faster, it runs now at about +1 seconds/day, which isn't normal, but very acceptable to me.

    Kind regards,
    Paul
