I need your help to make a decision: I own a IWC 3717 (love it) and a Rolex GMT Master II. Should I trade them for a Portuguese Automatic in SS (5001)? Thoughts? Comments? My heart says yes but I need to listen to what experts like all of you have to say.

By the way, Michael does a tremendous job managing the forum. But all of you do a wonderful job too. From the pictures to the research and comments you guys post, I have deeply fallen in love with IWC. I bought my 3717 two months ago and I have visisted the forum every day since.

    Thanks to all.

    I know the problem...

... beacuse for me the only way to get the 5001 was to trade it for a 3714 and a 3706 I owned. Personally I consider the 5001 the perfect IWC, loaded with IWC's history and (here we go again) it's DNA. I never have regretted the trade and wear my 5001 almost daily. But beware: the 5001 is more of a dress watch and the watches you own are sportier. As Michiel pointed out: follow your heart. You have two great watches but if the 5001 calls to you and the only way to get it is by trading the other two, than do it....

    IWC experts, need your help!

Dump the Rolex and save a bit to buy the 5001 and keep the 3717.
So you have a near to perfect dress watch and a fantastic looking pilot watch for more casual occasions.
The bonus of the great calibre in the 5001 is in my opinion the extra to make your decision.

    Stylistically speaking....

...the 5001 is a very different watch from the two you currently own. Is that what you want? Would you still want/need a sports watch if you bought a 5001?

I own a 5001, am greatly impressed with it, but make sure it's what you want to wear every day first.

    I am no expert...

but know the feelings of which you speek. Find some way to aquire the 5001 if it speaks to you, even if it means waiting. You will otherwise be haunted by the desire to wear the watch you really want.

    Decisions, decisions...

You mentioned that you loved your 3717 so I would keep it. As for the GMTII, I would to trading it in for the 5001. Depending on condition and style you may be closer to yoru goal than you think. But as others have said beware because the 5001 is dressy and the Rolex is Sportier and also suited for almost anything.

I wish you luck as I have been in a similiar boat for about a year. I desire the 5001 and am looking to trade my AT chrono and my Port Chrono in to fund the new acquisistion but every time I've had a buyer or went to trade in the watch I would make the mistake of wearing it "once more for old times sake" and I back out of getting rid of either one.

I found that doing so was a good test to see if I wouldn't miss the watch. If I enjoyed so much I smiled when wearing it again I wouldn't be happy if I sold it so I didn't. meanwhile I've been saving and I'll be close to getting it in 6 mths without having to get rid of anything. Good luck

    Drop the GMT...

keep the 3717 (you love it) and save for the 5001. And wear them in good health.

    Don't sell the 3717!

I today have mine for 3 weeks and won't ever sell it. I think it's the perfect combination with the 5001.

One is a sports watch and a classic Pilot's style, the other one is elegant and leisure. I love them both and will keep them both until my son will get them one day.

That said I must admit that I sold 3 IWCs (Mark XV, UTC classic and Portuguese chrono) and a non IWC (Union Glashuette) for my 5001. Unfortunately the 5001 costs a bit more than some other watches. And I really can understand you that you want it because I wanted it the same way as you do now. And I still am very happy with my decision. But I wouldn't have sold a 3717 for the 5001. In fact the 3717 was not avaiable then. It was just around last year's SIHH fair when I bought the 5001.

If you wouldn't like the 3717 very much that would be different. But maybe you'll regret it that you have let it go if you do. Maybe you'll miss it soon. You write "I own a IWC 3717 (love it) " and "I bought my 3717 two months ago and I have visisted the forum every day since." I guess that means something.

Maybe you can sell the Rolex and something else (?) and then try to save some more money for the 5001. Just a suggestion.

Just my 5 cents, good luck with your decision.

Hi Liceaga! I would do the following...>

Keep the Ref. 3717. I have been waiting ten years for this watch and it is a master piece. In fact, a Patek 5059 P would be the olnly watch which could replace it for me as a daily beater.

Do not go for the Portugieser 5001. Instead, choose as Nicky did, and I did the Portugieser Regulateur Ref. 5444. This piece is much nicer then the 5001 and so PW like, with a elegance all it's own.

    Cheers from Isobars.

    No! Go for the 5001!

But don't sell the 3717 for it! Please see my above posting. But don't let Isobars talk you out of the 5001! :-)

Sorry, Isobars! We have a different opinion about the 5001. Maybe you should have had the silver dial instead of the black. Then things would have been different to you. :-)

Hey, Liceaga. let us know your decision when it is made.
    All the best,
    Tilo
