On April Fools day, which was also Easter Monday, we had a nice GTG. It's not appropriate to call it a Dutch GTG since it was very international. We had Bill over from the States, Ralph and his wife Maureen from the UK, Tonny with wife Sabine and daughter Lore from Belgium, Giovanni from Germany (or is it really Italy? He is still allergic to the Deutsche Fussball Bund watches) and Anne who is originally from France. There were a few Dutch collectors present too: Bas, Erik, Mark and I. Anne brought her husband Michael so in total we were 13.

The location for this memorable meeting was perfect. Mark and I were unanimous about the choice for the Okura hotel with the Yamazato restaurant. Another big bonus was that they had a separate dinner room for us. This way, we didn't bother the other guests with our discussions about watches, watches being handed over all the time and the numerous pictures we took. The hostesses stayed very polite but one or two times we were urged to start eating, otherwise the whole kitchen planning would fall apart!

Luckily, somebody (I believe it was Bill?) reminded us of the obligatory Food Shots. So, to wet your appetite for the rest of the story, let's first get over with the food stuff:

    “Sakizuke” amuse bouche:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3532.JPG

    “Zensai” appetizer:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3534.JPG

    “Tsukuri” sliced raw fish:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3538.JPG

“Shiizakana” meat dish, Miso soup and rice:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3551.JPG

    “Mizukashi” dessert:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3558.JPG

Sorry for the watch in the last shot, the picture without watch was too blurry, despite the fact that I was the designated driver and only had the welcoming Champagne (just a glass, not the bottle!)

    Stay tuned for more..

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

Wow! The GTG meeting in Amsterdam was nicely equipped with "sophisticated" Food and Watches. Congratulation!

As old fashioned pocket watch fan, I am more oriented to basic food and watches ;-)

    How it all started.

Quite a while ago, Bill mentioned that he would be traveling to Europe and that he would have a stop in Amsterdam. We (Mark and I) immediately decided to organize a little meeting and we started to work on the date. Since I wasn't able to attend a meeting in the second weekend of April, we decided on April 1st. At that moment, we didn't realize this was on Easter Monday! It was only when we contacted forum members to join that we found out that many were out for Holidays or had other plans with the family. Bill had already booked his plane tickets and other stuff so we couldn't reschecule the meeting anymore.

In the end, we got together a nice group of people and some of them were actually very happy with the date, which saved them from other obligatory visits (I won't tell who told me this ;-)

Since our famous collector Mark has close relations with IWC, we were extremely lucky that Anne could join us too! Anne works for IWC in the Benelux and she was so kind to bring plenty of the Ingenieur novelties with her. If that wasn't enough, she also brought four versions of the new Portuguese Chrono! Personally, I think that Mark forced her to come and bring the rose gold Portuguese Chrono. We had to overpower him and put Bill on him to take the watch off by force at the end of the evening (sorry Mark for stepping on your recently refinished Pocketwatch in the process).

The afternoon started out peacefully with a drink or two in the bar. Erik and I arrived at the hotel desk and ran into Bill and a few others. It wasn't for long that we were all there, occupying a large portion of the bar:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6598.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6600.JPG

Here you see Mark is already trying to convince Anne in rendering him the new RG Portuguese Chrono:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6601.JPG

As you all know, IWC has also made smaller watches in the past and here Sabine is wearing the smallest and largest watches present at this meeting: the ladies Da Vinci Perpetual Quartz and the BP 5002:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6604.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6604_closeup.jpg

Meanwhile, I was admiring this Pt Régulateur that Giovanni brought:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3524.JPG

I just realize that when you are photographing watches, the timestamp of the pictures doesn't matter. This one is running spot-on and this picture is the last I took in the bar...

    Stay tuned for even more!

Somewhere between 18:26 and 18:41 we went to our dining room and were very pleasantly surprised by the wonderful room and great view of the Japanese gardens. Since we just switched to Summertime, the sun was still shining and all the snow was gone (albeit just!).

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6605.JPG

As you can imagine, all collectors were in favor of first having a look at the novelties before having our welcoming champagne. It was just a few minutes after we entered the dining room that everybody was all over the watches!

Tonny and Bill are heating up the cameras:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6606.JPG

While Anne is still busy putting down the watch boxes, it's Ralph who wins the race to take the first shot of them!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6607.JPG

Meanwhile, Erik was experimenting a bit with my camera and patiently waited before trying on the novelties. We have here a WG Portuguese Perpetual with Ardoise dial, a Pt Fliegerchrono, the Micky Mouse.. ehh Miramar and the Big Pilot 5002. Is it the slow or fast beat? Stay tuned for more on this.

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6608.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6613.JPG

Mark immediately strapped on the new RG Portuguese Chrono and I must admit it's a stunning watch:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3526.JPG

The three others were laying in the box, so I could take a few pictures of them. Unfortunately the pictures are not too good, we didn't have enough time for a proper shoot.

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3527.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6618.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6621.JPG

One would almost think that these Portuguese Chrono's were all the novelties but no, there were quite a few lovely Ingenieurs present too! Here are a few shots of some:

    Chrono Racer:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6616.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6617.JPG

    Double Chrono:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6622.JPG

Silberpfeil, brown and silver dial versions:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6623.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6624.JPG

And the last shot of the novelties, the Ingenieur Automatic AMG Ceramic, brown dial version:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6625.JPG

After about half an hour, there was still plenty of action around the new watches:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6627.JPG

Aparently, Anne resisted to the arguments Mark used to acquire the new RG Portuguese Chrono so Mark tries his luck with her husband Michael (who actually owns a Pilot's watch Chrono 371701):

The final part! Thanks for reading so far.

After the Novelties, it's time to have dinner. Luckily we already had the food shots so let's enjoy a few shots of the guests and the watches.

Bas brought his collection of Aquatimers and impressed many with the ingenious quick-release system of the straps and bracelets. Somehow, I didn't spot an Orange strap tonight though. Erik was wearing is Aquatimer Cousteau, the version with the engraving of many fishes on the back. We all remember the story Tonny posted about the exact number of fishes and Erik admitted that he too counted them to verify!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6629.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6630.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6632.JPG

Erik also really liked the Miramar and Ralph enlightened us with the story why he bought it. His wife Maureen told me that the watch did nothing for her. She does appreciate beautiful watches though, but this one isn't one of them.

Since I was seated next to Giovanni, I took advantage of the opportunity and strapped the beautiful WG blue dial Portuguese Perpetual on my right wrist and Giovanni was kind enough to take this picture:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3528.JPG

A few of the watches close to my seat: Pt Régulateur; the before-mentioned WG blue dial Portuguese Perpetual; a very special Ingenieur Automatic AMG with Carbon dial; the wonderful WG Da Vinci Perpetual with Ardoise dial and the Vintage Ingenieur Laureus:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3531.JPG

(For the chronologically orientated readers: insert Food Shots 1 & 2 here, “Sakizuke” amuse bouche and “Zensai” appetizer)

On the opposite side of the table, Ralph was also taking pictures:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6633.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6634.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6635.JPG

Unfortunately, I didn't catch the story that made Tonny look a bit angry, luckily it didn't last long as he's a great guy and full of jokes and anecdotes!

Michael is listening to an interesting story while Mark and Giovanni are sending watch pictures to watch buddies all over the world. Or were they working out ways to separate me from my Pisa Perpetual?

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6636.JPG

Bas was also still taking pictures and I have seen a few on Facebook already. Erik was having an interesting conversation with Sabine and Lore.

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6637.JPG

A shot of one of Marks beautiful pocket watches:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6638.JPG

Mark, is this the one I stepped on?

I couldn't resist strapping on the Ingenieur Automatic AMG with Carbon dial:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3535.JPG

    It's quite a special watch!

(Insert Food Shot 3 here, “Tsukuri” sliced raw fish)

After the sliced raw fish, some of us got restless and we saw some interesting groups of watches appear here and there. The main dish still had to be served but we were already preparing ourselves for the famous "Table Shot".

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3543.JPG

I managed to get hold of the BP Muhammed Ali version to take a picture. This one has a modified strap with red stitching and it looks amazing. Well done Giovanni!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3544.JPG

Then, something strange happened. I don't know how but suddenly I was wearing the new RG Portuguese Chrono! I now understand what came into Mark...

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3545.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3546.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3547.JPG

As I wrote earlier, the kitchen staff had given up on us so we had to wait a bit longer. Luckily, Mark had something nice to kill the time and asked our friend Tonny to read and translate it for us since it was in French.

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6639.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6640.JPG

Some of you may know what it is: the new version of the certificate of the IWC ledgers, the "Certificat d'Autenticité".

Tonny likes it but you can see that he is shocked by the amount they charge for it now ;-)

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6641.JPG

His wife has to calm him down:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6642.JPG

    And it works!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6643.JPG

Finally, the main dish arrives (insert food shot 4: “Shiizakana” meat dish, Miso soup and rice. One could have also chosen the fish variation: “Shiizakana” seasonal fish dish, Miso soup and rice but I don't have a picture of it)

Magically, some Perpetuals gathered in front of me and it is just now while I write this report that I realize that the ladies Da Vinci Perpetual Quartz should have been in this picture too!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/3555.JPG

Meanwhile, the dessert has arrived as you can see in the background of the above image.

(insert food shot 4: “Mizukashi” dessert)

There was some ice cream with the dessert and since the staff was a bit overwhelmed by our presence and the watches, they were a bit late in explaining what it was. Luckily our much-traveled guest Ralph could enlighten us and told us it was "Green Tea" ice cream. I wouldn't have guessed that myself, the taste reminded me a bit of Pistachio but much more subtle. It was delicious, just like the fresh fruit that came with it.

Just because we could: another shot of six Perpetuals:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6644.JPG

Tonny still enjoys his ice cream while Anne and Bill are chatting:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6645.JPG

And then, at about ten to ten, which is probably one of the worst times for the position of the hour- and minute hands, we got to the moment to take the famous "Table Shot". A quick count showed that we had about 50 watches and pocket watches present. Not bad for such a small group!

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6646.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6648.JPG

Maybe some of you saw my April Fools post on Facebook and I had promised my son Thomas that I would take a picture of his Ice Watch among the IWC's so pardon me for this outsider in the middle :-)

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6650.JPG

I wasn't the only one to take Table Shots as you can clearly see:

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6651.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6652.JPG

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6654.JPG

Then, after the photo shoot when everybody was getting back their own watches, Bill and Ralph suddenly realized that they both had put their BP 5002's on the table without knowing their serial numbers by heart. If I am correct, Bill has the transitional 3 Hz version and Ralph the slow beat 2.5 Hz version. Both decided to get a long shutter speed picture and count the beats. This however, didn't work out too well and I was convinced that one could hear the difference. So, I put one to my left ear and one to my right and close my eyes to concentrate (who took those damn pictures that I already saw on Facebook!!! ;-)

While I was concentrating, Bill came up with the ultimate solution in telling who's who's watch (pardon me if this isn't correct English). The answer was so simple that we couldn't believe it was staring us in the face the whole evening! Bill's BP 5002 was still on New York Time and Ralph's was on CEST. This story will go in the annals and it had us all laughing for a very long time.

When I resolutely told which one was the slow beat, I was proven wrong so there goes my theory. Maybe in a more quiet environment and after a few test runs, it's possible to hear the difference but the circumstances weren't ideal. It was fun though!

To finalize, Anne had a goodie bag for all of us. It contained the super-sized catalog of the new Ingenieur line, a copy of Watch International and also a Top Gun coffee mug. This last item in particular is not easy to get as I was told and I am going to take very good care of it.

    sibon.triple-it.nl/images/stories/20130401AMS/6655.JPG

I am sure that I speak for all who were present when I say that we had a wonderful evening and I want to apologize for making fun of Mark. Nobody was hurt and no watch nor pocket watch either!

Thanks for taking the time to read all my stuff, I hope you enjoyed it and please let us know if and when you are in Amsterdam (or Belgium, as Sabine added) so we can organize another great GTG. My special thanks to Bill for he was the reason to organize this, to Anne and her husband Michael to join us on a Holiday and of course IWC Benelux for letting us have a look at yet another series of beautiful watches and providing us with the goodie bag!

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

PS: I hope the other attendees will add more pictures and don't hold back on the funny one where I am listening to the two BP's. I have done more silly things already :-)

As they say in the classics "love is blind"...

...well indeed I must honestly admit, that I without a doubt, I was totally oblivious to fellow forumers, their lovely spouses and daughters, the guest of honor (Bill, did I really ignore you?) and even the host of magnificent IWC's that this bunch of Collectors brought with them!

Certainly this blind focus on getting to see that IW390402 Classic Chrono in rose gold, persisted until Anne finally produced the beauty (strange...I always refer to the watches as handsome...but this, one is BEAUTIFUL!).

Brilliant Clemens et al - I was honoured to get an invitation and very sad to have to pass it up as it was a holiday.

Cudos to all, especially IWC Benelux, for what looks like a fantastic GTG. Loved the pics and the stories Clemens! And of course the watches - the new rose-gold/brown-Santoni Portuguese Chronograph is a winner. I also get a real kick out of Giovanni's carbon Ingenieur AMG.

It's true and I am the butt of the joke. I was dutifully following Ralph's instructions to take a 1 second shot of the 5002's side by side to separate our identical BPs. The pictures were terrible and we could not count the difference in beat. It was then I peeked out from behind the camera's eye piece to see my slow beat 5002 was on EDT. DUH!!!!! Problem solved.

The other knee slapper that caused Giovanni a near collapse from laughter was Ralph's question to the group as we all had our watches on the table, "What time is is?" I think he was actually curious about the time too.

Clemens, thanks for the great review and pictures. The evening was organized perfectly. Once again, the best part of this Forum, at least for me, is the chance to make great friends all over the world and to have the opportunity to share our passion together. Of course, the Forum is THE best site to share our knowledge and excitement about IWC as well. Thanks to IWC for supporting this special place. Thanks too to IWC Benelux for joining with us on a holiday evening.
