The well known ledger from IWC stops in 1974.
Before that year it was possible to see how many calibers were made, but that is of course not the same as models because a certain IWC caliber can be built in several watch models. Although collectors have asked IWC during collector meetings in Schaffhausen and in Geneva to reveal numbers produced after 1974, the manufacture has been very scarce with information. Many of us wanted to know how many pieces have been made from certain limited editions. For sure some limited editions have not been produced in the full (limited) series, if the watches were not sold as IWC expected. One of the reasons is the fear that such information can be used by forgerers. Sometimes a limited series was built during several years, because the watch was very expensive (Ref. 5240, Portugieser Minute Repetition). In general little information is released by IWC. In rare cases collectors themselves found out how many watches from a certain model have been made. An example of this is the research by several collectors to find the number of Vintage Portugiesers ( Ref.325).
