I joined the forum last week with the plan to perhaps buy a IWC later this year or next. That is until I saw this UTC classic in mint condition at my local AD today. Needless to say I was sold...

    Hi Marinus64

That is a great watch - got one for myself recently.

As mhoutman noted, you have a non-tritium dial and I guess it must be one of the last produced. I have the tritium/SL dial - mine has serial number 276958X - I am curious as to how far apart mine is from the last Classic UTCs produced - do you mind telling me your serial no. please?

    Last Classic UTCs produced ?

    Hi Niels,

Serial number is 288693X and the date on the guarantee card is November 2006 so this may very well be one of the last ones produced.

By the way, how can I tell that is is a non-tritium (and is that a good thing ?)

    Regards, Marinus

    Last Classic UTCs produced ?

You cant really use the selling/warranty date for much - mine is stamped in 2008 but judging by the s/n my watch is more than 100,000 pcs older than yours.
The "classic" Pilot UTC disappeared from the catalogue after 2003.
I think this watch was a slow seller and many remained on the shelves for years.
The "tritrium" dial is identified by a 'T' before and after Swiss Made. For some unknown reason (to me) IWC choose to combine Tritrium and Luminova in the beginning (all of the classic UTC watches that I have seen have the T dial) - the hour markers are Luminova but the 12 o'clock triangle and the hands are Tritium and will most likely have a slightly warm patina by now.
Yours appear to be all Luminova thus probably giving dial and hands a more homogeneous look.
Which is better must be in the eyes of the beholder. The watch is not a hot collector’s item so there is no judgement on attractiveness from this community yet :-).
