I've just watched a video on watch care and was informed hat the magnetic cover on a tablet computer could have a detrimental effect on the watch? Is this a real threat, and if so, what sort of damage could it cause? Is it advisable to buy a new cover for my iPad?

Use an iPad and wear a variety of watches. No ill effects so far. If there were any it would cause a magnetised watch which would keep poor time. A good watch repaire has a means of demagnetising watches and it takes less than a minute to do. Bedside radios alarms with their unscreened speakers I would imagine are more likely be a risk.

It depends on the watch. I have not had an issue with my iPad but I did sell a Reverso because it magnetised going through the security scanners at airports and offices. Get yourself a protected Ingenieur or a Pilot's watch with a Faraday cage and you will sleep soundly. As Greg said, I good watch repairer will have the equipment to demagnetise your watch.

Thanks. I hadn't considered airports, and I'm a real amateur in terms of these things. Is it OK to put my watch through the x-ray machine? They insist on it in my part of the world

Indeed, the influence of magnetic fields is underestimated !

Not only modern covers have magnets, even a fridge uses magnets for proper door closing.

And many many other technical thing too.

BTW, xray and airport scanners have NOTHING in common with magnetic fields !

    This article clarifies magnetism shieldings.
