the VC Aquatimer, ardoise in wg

The best new IWC of 2009? Hmmmm, not an easy question. To me, however, one stood out amongst the rest - the white gold, vintage collection aquatimer. It's the year of the aquatimer and this one features the in-house cal. 80111 with an arsoise dial that has historical roots (see anthracite / ardoise dials of the early 1970s). The ardoise dial takes the functional aesthetic of the at to the next level by perfectly blending the functional with the sublime. Simply perfect. Other new watches come close -- see the Ingenieur chronograph -- but none are this perfect.

    My winner is:

The new Aquatimer 2000 in black and yellow.

    The reason why I choose this watch is because;
    - watch is a real piece of history to IWC; it's an Aquatimer; it's simple to work with; it's a ' constructed' watch and it has improvements over the last watch

    • the new bezel design is first beautifull and functioal too; the saphhire is nearly not to be scratched and from a design point of few it's a warmer look

    • it's a watch more people can buy. It's more of an entry watch. I've always like these watches. Like the portofino's. It's not a watch you really have to be affraid of

    • It's really a masculine watch

    • and fit's my collection that brings the Aquatimer line for me to 10 watches:
      1 1812
      2 1816
      3 1822
      4 Ocean Bund
      5 GST Aquatimer Ti
      6 GST aquatimer SS
      7 Deep One
      8 Split minute
      9 Cousteau

So you will understand... that I am really looking forward to this Aqua 2000!

    Aquatimer 2000

The best introduction of 2009 from IWC is the Aquatimer 2000, because it's a simple and pure design in the best IWC tradition. It's functional, pretty and the strap changing system makes it a versatile piece for all occasions and also suitable for people who stick to a One Watch Collection.

The one that probably won't appear

The return of the external bezel on the Aquatimer range is most welcome. My (non IWC) daily beater dive watch has an external bezel and a quick twist makes measuring elapsed time quick and easy. I've long had a soft spot for the white dialed Aquatimers and the one above with the blue bezel and band with orange baton markings is an excellent colour combination.

The blue Aquatimer is watch of the year.

If IWC don't release the watch they will make a serious "blue".

    Cheers from the cellar

    My nomination is...

This is imho a real IWC, as it continues the diver series with a depth gauge. Furthermore the depth gauge mechanism is very clever engineered and its looks (the best looking diver watch with a depth gauge on the market today) are simple no nonsense.

    Just my 2c.

    I go digital

I choose Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month

Reasons why I pick this model:

Innovation and tradition: the digital display of day and month shows IWC ability to lead the way of innovation (not just technical but also aesthetical) but also to respect its past and take inspiration by it (Pallweber heritage and lesson).

Technology & Development: Calibre 89360 represents to me a tough challenge IWC has seriously taken some time ago, to develop in house cronographs.

The 89800 declination of this calibre makes it even more attractive to my eyes for the further complications the Da Vinci hosts.

Rose gold: although I'm aware there's a platinum version and many forumers gives the right attention to the models in this configuration of material, I've always thought IWC gives its best in rose gold.

    Ingenieur Mission Earth...

For me this watch represent both IWC's history in watchmaking and it's new commitment to the envirionment. It's not also a great looking watch, it's also very reliable and sturdy. The perfect outdoor watch in my opinion.

Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Following on from the long standing tradition of IWC and Pilots watches this is my favourite watch/series this year.

IWC have led/endorsed many passionate partnerships and this one is one of my favourite. This watch/series also is my personal favourite since I have been hoping to expand my collection to include a Big Pilot and seeing one this year which has semblances of the 5002 has filled an aesthetic niche for me.

This watch also nicely personifies a timely end to the life and work of Antoine de Saint Exupéry - and all good things must come to an end (well for the limited editions anyway).

This watch has also the opportunity to be a last legend having the series now nicely fulfiled its chameleon of diversity within the pilot range of IWC Watches.

For me its a 2009 winner.

Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month RG

I have admired the stylish DaVinci case since the first models were released. The initial Perpetuals in the line honored Kurt Klaus, who to me represents all that is IWC. In my mind I will always associate DaVincis with Herr Klaus, and Herr Klaus is a walking advertisement for IWC.

My 60 year old eyes aren't that good, and the digital month and day make a Perpetual far easier for me to read then the previous versions.

Now if I could just find the cash! :-)

    Galapagos

I think the Galapagos should be IWC's watch of the year due to its unique matte black vulcanized rubber finish and its excellent readability. Not too big and not too small, It's really the coolest dive watch/tool watch in the world.

    Deep Two...

    Tough choice, MF.

I like most of the 2009 Novelties. Some of my favorites are: AT Chrono in Rose Gold, Ingeniuer ME and BP St. Ex.

But my vote has to go to Deep Two.

This watch is the another well-executed product from IWC. I'm sure the project team spent countless hours in producing this amazing watch.

All in all, Deep Two is a product the outdoes a legend (Deep One). It is destined to become a new legend itself.

To the Deep Two Project Team > I salute you!

    Portuguese Minute Repeater Ref IW5449

Why making such a watch in the times of electricity and superluminova?

Because someone thought it is not futile
Because it is the chronological bridge to the past
Because of the emotions it involves
Because it is a hospital for all senses
Because it is the most appealing aesthetically
Because it is made the hard way
Because after all it could only be an IWC

I nominate the AT Deep Two >>>

Although I am not a diver, preferring instead higher pursuits (like the Matterhorn), I nominate the AT Deep Two as the IWC 2009 watch of the year. Why? Because it embodies all that has IWC has become to mean to me. First, it is beautiful in is own right. The dial design is very impressive and functional. It embodies what I believe is a very distinct and unique diver’s watch. It stands out in the crowd. Secondly, it is a marvel of technical innovation something that IWC represents to many collectors and to me. IWC seeks to always improve upon its past and the Deep Two reflects this strategy more than any of the other 2009 models. The following direct quote from the description of the Deep Two highlights how far IWC went to improve upon the Deep One:

“Like its predecessor, the GST Deep One from 1999, it shows not only the actual dive depth, but also the maximum depth reached during a particular dive. It thus doubles as a complete second safety system alongside the dive computer. Whereas the GST Deep One was able to measure water depths down to 45 metres, the Aquatimer Deep Two features a semi-circular indicator on the dial, which records depths down to 50 metres.”

It find it hard not to nominate all of the AT’s from the 2009 Collection, but this one struck me as above the rest even though I am unlikely to have in my collection. If IWC develops a skiers watch, I will be first in line. : ).

    My passion this year....

has been to learn more about the history of IWC watches and the evolution of the different watch "families." Therefore, I am drawn to the 2009 Vintage Collection in precious metals. My watch of the year goes to the Rose Gold Portofino Hand-Wound (IWC544803). This tribute to the 1984 first Portofino has a luminous white dial with a colorful perpetual moon phase display set opposite the seconds display sub-dial. The balance of the dial surrounded by the 18k (4N ) Rose Gold is a handsome rendition of a classic timepiece.

    Best regards,
    Jim

    The new blue/orange/white Aquatimer...

I just saw CAD pics of that version recently. I really like my original "Cousteau" Aquatimer, because I really like the colors of that version. The blue and orange go together well. I think this would be appealing for the same reason.
