I was fortunate to be invited to NYC for this eventful day!

At the YUL lounge waiting for my flight:

Sadly, it's still dark outside at this time of the morning :-(

I found Kevin already lusting for this one...............

Can it really be the 51st day of the month????!!! LOL

Odd place for the date wheel to stop!!!!!!!!!

My turn to try this on:

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160844.jpg

After the visit to the Flagship I had a business meeting after-which I headed to the hotel for my appointment with IWC. A few sights on the way:

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160851.jpg

    Arriving at the hotel:

I was met in the lobby by the lovely Maria from IWC (Director of Marketing) and taken to the Penthouse floor.

I was very surprised to see a very special presenter of the Sidérale......guess who?

In a private viewing room this masterpiece appeared:

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160856.jpg

As I was angling the watch to take a photo of the starry back, I saw this reflection, hehehe!!!!!

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160858.jpg

This Platinum version was absolutely breathtaking and a joy to wear!

The watch can be customized to over 200 variations with interchangeable dials, cases, straps, hands, etc......

    Here are the dial options:

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160862.jpg

Trying out the Platinum case with Blue dial combo.............what do you think?

    Rose Gold stitching, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160870.jpg

    What's this?????

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160874.jpg

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, what's inside the box?

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160875.jpg

it's a custom made winder for this manual movement. It is also been designed to "sense" the tension and stop as to prevent over-winding, how cool is that!!!!!!

    i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/nad1/NYC%20IWC%20April%202012/NYC%20IWC%20Oct2012/L1160876.jpg

Not sure if the embedding of this video will work, so here's the link showing the winding mechanism at work"

The surprise presenter of the Sidérale was none other than my old friend Hannes Pantli!!!!!!

My appreciation for this watch has grown exponentially now that I have a better idea of it's true functions.

Here are a few things I learned that you might find interesting about the watch:

    • I already mentioned the customization options for dial, case, strap, hands.

    • The starry sky is duplicated to the exact point of the watch owner. The representation is accurate up to 20 meters, after-which a new sky is required

    • It takes THREE (3) months just to chart the sky before any production can start

    • The star discs change from Grey to Blue depicting day & night

    • The perpetual calendar shows the day of the year rather than the month/date. For example, instead of showing October 16, it is represented as the 290th day of the year!

    • There is a sunrise and sunset time indicator on the back

    • A "solar" day is how long it takes Earth to rotate once (24 hours) – and then some. A sidereal day – 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds – is the amount of time needed to complete one rotation. Therefore the main hands (solar time) and the sub dial at 12 (siderale time) will match up once every 12 months!

These are just a few highlights about this timepiece!

Thank you for your photos and your remarkable coverage of the Siderale! Each time I read or hear something concerning this time instrument I become more fascinated and "hooked" on it! The level at which IWC designed the mechanism for the star chart and for the siderale time is fantastic and wonderful!!

    Thank you!

Indeed it is impressive watch and like David another one I'll never own, but seriously complex and ingenious.
Okay Nad, who placed their order first out of the regular forumers, you, Kevin or Alan and who had carte Blanche to order Bill's?

Thanks for the great story and pictured Nad! I have just today booked my first visit to New York which will be about this time next month and will have to try and take in some of the sights you have posted here (A trip to the flagship store is definitely in order!) and can only hope that I have as good a time as it looks you had (unless something strange happens I dont think the Siderale event will be on again when I am there)

    Cheers,

Great report Nad, with some spectacular pics.
Why do I not live in NY ???

I had an enjoyable weekend listening to music from the Austin City Limits music festival. However, one of the disadvantages of living in the 'hinterlands' is not having access to a special IWC event like this one. Thankfully, Nad and fellow forumers always make an effort to share the experience with us. I would love to actually hold a Siderale. Thanks again Nad, for bringing us along!

    Great report, Nad (as usual)!

Alas, the only original bit I can contribute to this thread is a Friedberg photobomb:

As for the watch in question, just... wow.

Otherwise, it was great seeing the fellas (Nad, Kevin, Alan, Patrick, Hisham), the ladies (Maria, Noreen, Emily), the honchos (Gianfranco, Henri) and sharing a good time in spite of the soggy weather.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and see just how much my children will fetch on the black market.

    Regards,
    Adam
