I tried an experiment using my Point and Shoot camera (instead of a big DSLR) to get a close up shot. I used a cheap jewelers loupe in front of the lens. The first attempt delivered a fairly nice dial close up.
You get a bit of the looking through binocular feel, but with some more attempts and cropping I may have a way to do some close up shots just using these simple things. The macro setting cannot get this close, btw.
