I was wondering as to what kind of movement did the new pilot chrono have? I was told by the salesperson at the New York store that it was an ETA movement and that was the reason it was at that particular price point. Is that possibly true?
Yes and no is the answer. There are two chrono movements. One in-house and the other is a module on a well honed valjoux based movement. The price points reflect the movements. Two sub-dials mean in-house, three sub-dials mean Valjoux based.
Thanks.... the question for me really is if the chrono with the ETA/Valjoux movement is really going to hold on to intrinsic value as the years go or is it worth spending the difference, which is considerable,on lets say the new Spitfire chrono which has an entirely in house movement
In my opinion, buying a new watch is never go to be an 'investment', unless you are betting that in the case of precious metal the metal price will double/triple! Buy the watch for what you want it to be for you. Pilot chronos with 7750 movements are great instruments that are reliable and accurate, and give excellent timeless pilot styling, together with both day and date display.
IMO, the information given to you regarding the ETA/Valjoux movement used in the 3777 and it's reflection on pricing is a accurate and correct statement. If a in-house was utilized, you'd be paying for the research, development and labor associated with the construction. What I would focus on is whether the watch appeals to you and the enjoyment you would feel wearing it.
I have 3 models with the Valjoux Chrono movement and all I can say is each of them are extremely accurate and have never given me a service problem. The bottom line with the 3777 is that not only is it one of the best values in all the collections but it's just a fine looking piece. Interestingly, I cannot remember anyone ever regretting owning a Pilot Chrono due to the movement. If you find the "dressier" Spitfire suits your style more, go for it. Yes, you will get the in-house, Ardoise dial, fly back function among other amenities, but it will be priced accordingly as it should be.
I am a bit confused on the 2 sub-dial/3 sub-dial information being that my Portuguese Chrono (3714) has 2 sub-dials but believe is a Valjoux based movement. Anyway, not sure if that was directed to the pilot line only.
Whichever you choose, enjoy ! They're both great choices.
Thanks Andy much needed clarity there. My heart is set on the Pilot Chrono but there was a moments hesitation on the issue of the movement. The Spitfire is outstanding so maybe one first and then the other...... One just cant seem to get enough...
