    Hi,

I just my Portofino Chronograph watch, a black one with black leather strap and one of the things which I "like less" on the watch is that the big second hand is not moving unles in the chrono-timer mode. That is anyhow not strange - same goes for any other chronograph.
BUT, my question is, if I activate the timer mode, i.e. all the hands on the watch, can that "hurt" the mechanism in the long run?

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

Running the chrono for a prolonged period of time will increase wear and tear on the movement. It's best not to keep them running all the time.

In the meantime, enjoy your lovely watch and wear it in good health.

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

If you search the archives, there's some disagreement among professionals here. One member, who is IWC's head watchmaker in after-sales service in London, believes it doesn't hurt the mechanism.

Correction MF, he deals with not only IWC but other Richemont brands as well including VC Piaget Lange JLC BM and Cartier plus anyone else I haven't mentioned. Cartier are dealt with on one floor and the others on the floor above, it's that side of the business where he seems to spend most of his time. His previous employment included working at a top Bond Street firm and scratching his service mark in watches for amongst others the Queen and other senior members of the Royal family.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 7750 base movement doesn't provide jeweled rotation points for the chronograph part, which means wear and tear on straight pinions, just relying on lubrication.

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

Please understand that I didn't mean to diminish Leo's credentials one bit. But I still will state that other experts differ, especially since amplitude is reduced when running a Valjoux-based chrono, and ultimately timekeeping and autonomy are not optimal,

    Hi Michael,
I certainly didn't take your post as diminishing. On the contrary, I was quite chuffed to have my opinion referred to.
    Hi Greg,
Thanks for the shining endorsement but I can't claim to be master of all in our workshops.
Athough Panerai,VanCleef and Cartier antique/CPCP are also in my'stable' my role does not include Lange(Factory repaired only)or B&M and regular Cartier, both are repaired in the Cartier section of the workshop.
    Thanks again to you both.
