    Hi fellow IWC-ers,

My Portuguese Automatic (IW500107) has been great and I love it. But it just stopped all the sudden after having it for slightly over 2 years (out of warranty).

I sent it back to IWC's Houston Service Center and got a quote back saying it's b/c of heavy wear and tear and that "movement of your timepiece has a restriction in the motion of the movement and requires cleaning and re-lubricatino". It's going to cost me $775 for Complete Service, which I take it is in the ball park. I was going to wait for 5 years for the 1st service, but I guess now I'm getting it.

My question is, is this normal after just 2.5 years? And would this happen again? Should I wear it less?

Would like to hear other's experience and how often they send it in for service. Thanks in advance!

To help us answer your question, Please give us some additional information about your wear habits - like:

    Is it a daily wearer?
    Does it rest?
Do you put it on a winder?
Do you run, ride a bike or work out with it etc?

My only guess and I repeat that word guess is that it was in a sunny shop window before purchase for some considerable time and the lubricants had become useless. As for your wear habits, they sound fine and the rest period is fine and definitely no you should not put it on a winder. There have been some upgrades on the movement over time and this may happen when it goes in for service where parts get upgraded.
Just keep a record of when you have a watch serviced and when you get it back it should be as good as new if not better as it hasn't been in some shop window cooked by the sun and lamps for what may be months. As for tHe estimate that sounds comparable to UK prices when I had mine serviced.

Thank you so much Greg! Glad to hear I'm not doing anything unusual and that the price is about right.
