Jack, a brilliant series of posts...

...and an excellent lesson for all of us.

It's interesting --the counterfeiters can actually relocate the seconds indication in a Valjoux movement (no mean watchmaking) but can't do perlage.

It's also a "compliment" that someone would take an IWC and spend so much time and money to fake it. IWC has arrived :)

If you have any close-ups of the fake movement, I'm sure we'd be interested. It's incredible what effort the "manufacturer" took.

    Thank you again.

    Michael

    Thanks for the important lesson

Although I thought the fake looked fishy, I didn't know exactly why. One thing's for sure, though. I'll be buying at an AD or from someone I know and trust in the future.

    Thanks Jack...

...you made a great analysis. We are very lucky to have people so qualified here.

    Thanks again for your advice.

It's very worrying if counterfeit keeps on this work...I was talking with my AD and he said that it's not so unlikely that in the close future watches will be provided with a microchip. What do you think?

    Kind regards.

    Re: microchips

In addition to other counterfeit detections which IWC has, and what I won't divulge here for the crooks, its sister company V&C has a sophisticated microchip technology that could be shared in the future by IWC and other watch brands in the Richemont group.

    Mechanical watches and microchips

I am not thrilled by the idea that my mechanical watch would have a microchip to prove it is for real. I buy at the AD, that should be enough. Certainly counterfeiters will be able to break these kind of chips too, and you get a whole new kind of warfare.

    Re: microchips

"40 million counterfeit Swiss watches are produced around the world annually, almost twice as much as the number of orignals produced in Switzerland"

Gasp, it's incredible!! Thanks Jack for the link, I suppose IWS has something similar to what I read in teh article.

    Kind regards
