    Hello All,

I have the new spitfire chronograph IW387802 and wanted to find out if it's ok to rotate the crown counterclockwise when setting the time?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Welcome to the forum Jeff and congratulations on your new watch!

In general, it's safer to only advance the time. There is a time period where the date change mechanism is engaged and turning the time backwards in that period can damage the watch. This time period should be specified in the manual. For my watches (not the same ones as you have) I generally don't adjust the time between 20:00 and 02:00. Since most watches don't have a 24 hour dial, you cant't be sure if you are on AM or PM period. This can only be determined by advancing the time until the date changes.

Don't set the date using the quick-set function either during the same time period (e.g. 20:00 - 02:00 in the above example).

I hope this helps a bit and if you are unsure, check your manual and/or aks your jeweler for advice.

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

If I'm setting a watch with a date complication and am not sure if the time on the dial is somewhere between 5:00 am and 10:00 am (just to be perfectly safe), I'll first go forward until after the date changes before doing anything else.

always find it best to be safe.....and rotation the same direction all the time keeps you "in the habit", it will protect you in the long run....
Good luck! Great timepiece...we are eyeing one for the son.

    Dear Jeff:

I wondered about this, too. Some weeks ago, in anticipation of resetting my Mark XVI Pilot to allow for the change back to standard time and the resulting gain of one hour, I wrote to IWC for guidance about the safety of setting my watch counterclockwise one hour, which would be quicker than advancing the time almost a full day.

Frau Mechtilde Bamberger promptly and kindly replied that setting my IWC counterclockwise is perfectly safe as long as it is not done between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., when--as everybody knows by now--the automatic date change process is taking place. This works for me, since in my old age I am seldom up past ten p.m. anyway. (I cannot of course guarantee that Frau Bamberger's resetting advice extends to your model.)

I'd be interested to learn what other IWC folks think regarding this subject.

    Cheers!

    Donald

Donald, I resemble your remarks. But, don't set the time or day / date by quickset or going backwards between 20:00 and 02:00. You can always advance the minute and hour hands forward at anytime to set the time and day / date.

    Bill--

I agree: just to be safe, no setting of date or time between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.

    Thanks!
