Just a funny observation studying the dials of old pocket watches which could help to identify remad dials.

When looking older PW's I found they are not marked or just marked:

    "International watch Co"

Somewhere in the 1930's started to have:

    "International Watch Co"
    "Schaffhausen"

I think there could be an +/- exacte date when they started to add the "SCHAFFHAUSEN" to the dials.

Could be funny to find the first serial numbers having it on the dial, but take care, it could be repainted....

I think the case serial number limit is somewhere between 900'000 and 950'000.

Wrist watches could be special, there was a timethey hade the IWC in an ellipse with our without "SCHAFFHAUSEN".
    Interested? help searching ...

    Thanks and regards

    Ralph

Interested => sure, but out of my collecting time range.

And many of the experts disappeared from this forum ?!

But a coincidence could happen ....

    Hi Ralph,

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, and I never thought I'd get to correct the master.

But without exhaustively searching, here's a watch from 1890with SCHAFFHAUSEN on the dial, and a serial number below 60,000!

It's my Frauenfeld Schuetzenuhr from 1890! Here are some more images:

Hmmm, very interesting piece, may be I am wrong.

Many IWC-schooting watches have SCHAFFHAUSEN on the dial :-(

    Many thanks and kindest regards

    Ralph

P.S. Meis shows in his book the same watch with a dial without "SCHAFFHAUSEN"
has to be rechecked when the watches got the "SCHAFFHAUSEN"

Indeed. My 1905 Zuerich Schuetzenuhr (movement 374xxx) and 1912 Rorshau Schuetzenuhr (movement 520xxx) also have Schaffhausen on the dual. Hard to figure out why only these.
