I talked with IWC sales man today. It is said that Pilot's Watch Chronograph is not using ETA 7750 calibre anymore but using SW calibre. Is that true? Thank.
No, it is not true. I checked last month with the head of Product Management at IWC, and none of the flight watches will use Selita base movements. Those will be used in the Portofino line, but not the flight watches.
João --I think that it depends on the reference number of the Aquatimer model. If I recall there's a discussion about this in the archives. If you have your model number I'll try to check if the archives don't answer you.
João --I'm not sure, since it would depend on the date of production. Originally, IWC made all the movement modifications but more recently ETA does this to IWC's own specifications. The net result should be identical.
The other thing to keep in mind is that IWC assembles the watch, which includes "casing up" the movement and adjusting it as necessary.
I have recently purchased a Portofino Chronograph 2012 model. I have seen today from this Forum that the timepiece uses a Sellita Movement.
Michael has commented the new range uses a Sellita movement.
I have just called IWC to check and they have told me they do not use Sellita movements in the Portofino watch? and actually sounded horrified I asked such a question.
Who is telling the truth here?
If the Portofino is using a Sellita movment then I am disgusted as this is a Chinese company and not Swiss. This is my first luxury timepiece and I had hoped I was purchasing a 'Swiss Made' watch, not a Swiss Case with a Chinese movement.
Cheaper, less well known brands use Sellita, so why is IWC, am I paying for the brand?
To add to this I have found Marks on the inside of the Glass of the crystal and a thumb print on the hands.
I have sent numerous emails to IWC to which I have had no reply, Is this the kind of service you get when you pay 4k for a watch?
This isnt IWC bashing its wanting to know you are getting the quality you hope for.
Any help on this matter would be greatly recieved.
Sellita is NOT a Chinese company (although there are many fine Chinese companies). It is located La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. You can read about it at click here.
There is a Blog article by someone who wrote that the company is a bit of China because its movements replicate ETAs. Too bad that has such a misleading inference for some readers.
Thank you for the Link Michael and the reply both of you its appreciated, as Dave has said in his message he thinks the Automatic is the Sellita and not the Chronograph, can you shed some light on this?
