Dear All members of the forum,
I need your advice on a subject which has to do with the maintenance of watches.

IWC advices to have the watch serviced every five years. Some AD I have spoken to are of the opinion this periodic service is not required and they suggest to bring in the watch only when it has problems. Some others are of the opposite opinion as they say that, in order for the watch to be fully functional and to minimize the repair costs, the service has to be done periodically.

    what would you suggest?

    Thank you for your advices,
    Giovanni

Just my own experiance is like this.

Some of my watches haven“t had a service since more than 20 years and work without problems.

But these watches were rarely worn.

Periodic service generates just costs, nothing else.

If I would wear the same watch every day for many years, I would wear it, until it stops or the time deviation is about 15 sec./day.

But, before I would give it a service I would use a demagnetiser, because magnetising is often the root cause of deviation.

    Hello,

From my personal experience, I would 100% recommend having regular services. Just like we need our body checks, we are not seeing doctors just when we are ill, but also regular checks to prevent any problems to happen or to develop, as we don't know what's going on inside.

I hope this gives you a clearer thought on servicing.

    Regards,

    F

I do not let a watch pass 10 years without a lubrication and cleaning service. Even with little wear I believe the oils will dry out.

I wouldn't think of driving my car without an annual oil change.

If used regularly for swimming or diving take IWC's advice on water resistant seal check every 2 years.

None of my watches have ever been serviced. They keep on running beautifully. But I wear them in rotation, I let them run out most of the time when I am not wearing them for weeks. And I only go to the doctor when I am ill: probably a bad comparison. Apparently my body, and my watches, are in great shape. Body: move a bit, like walking and on a bike, no smoking, low on fat, sugar, salt and alcohol, abundant fruits and vegetables. Watches: nice and gentle treatment.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

First job years ago was for London importer of Oris watches. Service department advice, regular service, whether used everyday or only twice a year. Do you never have a check on the oil level for a car, only if you like big bills for a knackered engine or you have more money than common sense. A dry watch will have excessive wear, that's basic common sense.
