Who does not know this simple question.
Why you want to buy 1000 gramms of meat or cheese in "open" selling, you will get 1100 gramms and the question "Shall it be a little bit more ?"

The same could happen when you buy a watch. Normally you want to read the time. Dot!

Today you may buy something called a "watch" what is in reality just a (small?) computer.

In early times ,and also in the 1970/80's IWC sold some pocket watches which had "little more" than just the time (yes, there where and are wrist watches with add-ons too).

I could organize a small meeting of such pocket watches with little more.
    The little mores are:
    - moonphase
    - chronograph
    - Zodiac indication (with day of year?)
    - day of week
    - day of month
    - month
    - age of moon
    - minute repeater

    www.vintage-iwc.ch/bilder/little_less_than_1000.jpg

But here a mistake happened, it's a little less, only 972 Gramms of watch.

    Kind regards

    Ralph

Absolutely stunning. A tourbillon would have made it a little more.

    Hello Ralph,

That is a very impressive collection. I have a question about the watch in the middle--the one that I think is a ref 5250 but the hands look different than anyone that I have seen. Can you please confirm the reference number for me?

    Thanks and kindest regards,
    George

Yes it is the first version of Ref 5250.

Please remark thet even in the catalog the dial had "VII" "VII" instead of "VII" "VIII"

At least two hand design were used.

This ref. 5252 has the later hand/dial design and the fitting VIII.

The ref. 5250 has a "imitation enamel" dial and
the ref. 5252 has a "enamelled" dial.

    Whow what a nice watch!

Now I know what I am looking for for christmas (or later)..
    Ref. 5252.

The Ref. 5251 had the same versio of hands as the Ref. 5252 and the later versions of Ref. 5250. Would be interesting to know, if they chaged the hands of the Ref 5250 when ref 5251 came up.

The "enamail dial" is an interesting fact. I did not knew, IWC realy build a late PW with enamail dial, I only knew they had huge problems to get enamail dials of good quality and I assumed they gave up. So this was not correct.

Does Ref 5251 has real enamail or Simili-Email dials ?

    Kind regards

    Ralph

No idea about the ref. 5251 dial, Ralph.

But only a few "modern" PWs have imitation enamel dials.

Not sure, if I have all in mind:

    5250, 5305, 5306, 5450, 5810

    No guarantee !

Germans like nice round numbers, so reaching 1 Kilogram may be difficult, as finding a PW weighing 28 grams is going o be mission impossible. However, 972 grams is 15,000.25 grains, a much rounder number. :-)
BTW, wonderful IWCs. Thanks for sharing.
