After an exhausting workout, I staggered back to the changing rooms, pulled my towel outta by gym bag forgetting I left my aquatimer chrono on top and my precious watch hit the hard stone floor with a sickening thud! The towel kinda flicked the watch up to head height before crashing down. My questions to you guys are, just how shockproof are IWC watches? It used to run -1 sec/day but now it runs +2 sec/day a gain of 3 secs since yesterday! Is there a high chance the watch will stop functoning outta the blue one day? Thanks!

    Actually...

... your watch has improved functioning :-) Normally IWC regulates it's watches to run a bit fast and not slow and + 2 secs is great.
Aquatimers should be quite shock absorbing though not as good as the new Ingenieur that seems to be bullet proof. Of course there could be something (nearly) broken that could prevent it from running in the nearby future. The only way to make sure is to have it examined by a watchmaker (maybe through your AD), but I think your watch has survived well and will probably not be damaged by the fall considering it's still running properly.

all mechanical watches vary in rate...

    Hi T-man,

There's many factors affecting rate, of which shock resistance is just one. These factors include position (which varies every day in use) and temperature. At most a watch averages out these variations when you see a consistency from day-to-day.

Shock resistance is one factor, but for the most part all better mechanical watches have the same construction to deal with shocks. There is some difference due to the case and also in IWC's instance the Ingenieur has a special spring to absorb shocks which really does make that model more "bullet proof".

I personally wouldn't micro-manage your time-keeping on a daily basis, since there will be factors that cause variances that have no significance. Your watch is keeping excellent time.

    Regards,
    Michael

Really appreciate your explaination MF - I have only recently been obsessed with rate variations due to the fall but glad there seems to be no damage inside! :-)
