Here, in the forum, we can read in some cases some mixed views on the current trend for watches with a wider case diameter (up to 46 mm) and for watches with a larger case height (up to 15.2 mm). There was a previous excellent post on this trend on diameter (I cant find it though).

However, there are also some (non-midsize) examples with case diameters in the smaller 39 mm range (closer to the good old days) and case heights as small as 8.6 mm.

This is really a wonderful range for potential IWC owners - what a collection on offer.

My personal tastes seem to change with time - from the vintage smaller and thiner to some "fatties" like the GST Aquatimer to thoroughly appreciating the VC Aquatimer, VC Ingenieur and also the VC Portofino and VC Portuguieser.

The VC Portofino Moonphase perhaps has one of the largest ratios of case diameter to case width (46/11) that I am aware of..... I dont have time to get my calculator out for all models , but regardless of the current trend towards larger diameter watches, I seem to be able to adapt my taste to take into consideration all features of the watch, in addition to diameter and width - for full appreciation.

    Just some thoughts

    Survival of the Fittest

    Hello Andrew

Well I think you are right in general terms.
But among the "diversity of the species" which model is the "fittest" one? Which one is not?
And talking about trends do you think that by supersizing a case solves actual design inovations?
Would size prevent you from buying, does it act like a down barrier or not?

    Natassa hates big cases

         Regards
          Argiris

The thick and thin of it.

This photo has been posted previously, but it demonstrates the thickness difference of the VC Portofino and the relatively thick PPC.

IMHO, both obviously wear differently, both have great visual appeal, and but both are extremely comfortable. Each of us take into account many factors in judging a watch. I tend to rely on my initial reaction to the design and visual appeal of the watch. I almost take for granted that an IWC will always have technical superiority and great case finishing.

I tend to prefer larger diameter watches, btw.

    solution or aesthetic

size needn't neccessarily be determined by what is required for the solution all time...
the use of size in design can also be part of the aesthetic.

    I like ¨ª 42-44 mm ¢Õ

However, there are some smaller and larger models in my collection I will never sell.

    Cheers from Isobars.

Small, Large, Thick, Thin- There is an IWC for you

    Hi Andrew,
There have been many posts on the size of watches and the fashion of sizes when they were issued.
For sure the Jumbo Ingenieur and the Portofino Moonphase Pocketwristwatch have been classified by many as :"Right watch, wrong time". Now they are icons of all times. It is clear that the current fashion is 22-44 mm and IWC has responded to this trend by launching beautiful watches of this size.
A question from me to the other forumers and MF is : "Is there any indication that the diameter of wrist watches or the height of them will decrease. Was there any trend for this at SIHH or Basel? Or will we have stury big watches for the coming year(s)".
    Kind regards,
    Adrian.

The wide and narrow of it >>>

Still perfecting my photo skills and this is to demonstrate part of Andrews comment of a small diameter vs large diameter IWC's. Shown here are the Vintage Collection Portofino at 46mm and the Cal 89 at a diminutive 36 mm (I think). Both are relatively thin watches.

My wife enjoys the Cal 89, while I am a large diameter fan.

From everything I have read and...

seen, it will be a long time before smaller watches are back in vogue. There certainly are some available but they seem to be far fewer in number.
