    Forum Friends:

    Drove to my Sister-in-Laws today so that my wife could take care of some business with her sister. This was due to the recent unexpected passing of her husbund (my Brother-in-Law).

    After business was concluded, we decided to go for lunch. During the meal, my sister-in-law informed me that her husbund knew how much I appreciated watches new and old. She also said that he always looked forward to seeing what was on my wrist when we got together. I could tell he was becoming a huge IWC fan.

    So she informed me that her husbund had mentioned that I would take good care of his watches and enjoy them down the line.

    She presented me with 3 beautiful vintage 'automatic' watches. All swiss made and labeled T SWISS T. From what I learned as a short timer on the forum , this means the lume material used is Tritium. Correct? Also there have been a few discussions regarding Tritium vs. LumaNova. My concern is the safety of wearing these watches. Could anyone comment briefly on the safety issue and anything special that would be important to know?

    Told my wife about the T SWISS T and she says I should make sure my hand won't fall off if I waer them. She's concerned.....( and er,er so am I )

    Thanks for any help,

    Andy

    Hello Andy,

    The low energy electron radiation produced when tritium decays is absorbed by the case and crystal. It cannot hurt you unless it comes in direct contact with radiosensitive tissue such as that found in your lungs or intestinal walls. So as long as you don't eat it or breathe it, you are good to go.

    The following article is a good summary or the various radioluminescent paints;

    Radium was a real witches brew.

    Advertisment by L. Monnier & Co from 1942, they supplied radium for watch dials.

    Cheers from the cellar

    Simon & Cellar,

    Thank you so much for the feedback. I will now add these into the "wearing rotation". My wife thanks you also. She keeps looking at one alot and has been commenting how beautiful it is. I think she's going to ask about wearing it soon.

    Oh,Oh..here she comes....got to go...
