I am considering buying the Perpetual Calendar Engineer Watch with the case in Titanium Aluminum. However I have heard that this is not a scratch resistant material. I understand they might be several types of alloy and that surface treatment might significantly increase hardness and scratch resistance, but one on my friend has a IWC watch with Titanium case (not Titanium Aluminum though), and I noted it is very mcuh scratched. Is anybody with a perpetual calendar able to share experience?

    Hi Fred,

I have several titanium, steel and gold watches. There are no, or hardly noticeable small thin, scratches on them. Especially the titanium watches are scratch resistant, as they look great despite some action on the wrist.

This is no answer to your question, but I would like to point out that watches can be treated carefully, I would almost say with respect, without impacting your life to an inactive state. When your friend has a titanium watch full of scratches, I guess he was not careful at all with it. To me, that is not the normal way to handle a luxury watch, nor is it the normal state of such a watch.

Be a bit careful with that titanium aluminium watch, and I am sure you will find joy for many years with it.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

Ooh. Nice eye there. Fantastic watch. I like it - but have not pulled the trigger on it...yet.

I have several Perpetual Calendars and they do scratch. You'd be amazed the sort of fighting and running and throwing and violence can happen in a conference room these days. Seriously, my gold ones tend to get "cuff swirls" simply from the cotton, cashmere, silk and wool touching the watch - the 1 steel Perpetual I have, is most beat up with dings - due to the fact I wear it playing squash, biking, snowboarding, hiking, etc... I look forward to the watches returning from service with a fresh polish every 5 years or so...

I hope you decide to get that Inge

At SIHH they were stating that it is much more scratch resistant than regular titanium, by design

I have no idea about the scratch resistance but this is such an amazing watch! Keep us posted about the outcome and if you get one, make sure to post loads of pictures!

    Kind regards,

    Clemens
