Hello BMM,
By using the Applet called DateYourIWC, available on the internet, it appears that the movement with the serial number you gave is indeed a Cal. 74 produced in 1931.
The case itself dates from 1943. It does not say if it is a pocket or wrist-watch.
The above time gap between movement and case is not strange. In fact, rumor says that the very early Portugiesers were made with pocket watch movements "lying" at IWC's Schaffhausen warehouse.
From 1939 until 1943, IWC made 229 wristwatches with Cal.74, now known as Original Portugiesers. From 1944 on, IWC started to use Cal. 98 as well. In total (numbers are subject to changes in function of new discoveries), there were a bit more than 300 Portugiesers with Cal. 74 and around 365 with Cal. 98.
For you to be certain you have one of these 300+ (and not a conversion of a pocket watch made by adding lugs to the case - everything can happen!), you must write by email to our moderator Michael Friedberg and ask if the combination of your movement and case serial numbers are on his (secret) list of Original Portugiesers. Given the high market value of those watches, this list is not shared so that forgeries are somewhat kept at bay.
Good luck
Zoltan
Hello Kovacs,
I'm very pleased with your detail explanation about my IWC wrist-watch,and IWC cal.74 i 98 generally. My watch is not''hand made'' conversion by adding lugs on case or something like that.He is all original.
For shure,I need comfirmation.
Thank's for advice
Very best to You
BMM
You have an authentic reference 325 Portuguese wristwatch that was made in 1943. I have checked and the case number of your watch is on the list of known Portuguese wristwatches.
I suggest that you have IWC refurbish the watch, which will be costly but worthwhile since the watch in excellent condition is very valuable. To do that an authorized dealer should send the watch for service in Schaffhausen.
Hello Marian42,
''From a little help from my friend'' I post the picture of mine IWC Portuguiser cal.74 sav.17 lig.H from year 1931.
Thank you for help
