As some of you know, I am collecting pocketwatches, IWC only.

Far from saying that my collection is a museum collection but I am proud to
have found some nice and rare pieces over time.

Some of the pocketwatches are common, easy to find on the market, sometimes in
better condition than mine, but some I have are gems.

So in these crazy times, as the museum in Schaffhausen is closed, why not open
    one here on the forum.

As long as the museum is closed, I will post here daily a pocketwatch from my
    collection.

I hope I don't run out of pieces before the virus is beaten. Fingers crossed
    for all of us.

I will post them in a random order, with some comments, feel free to join.

    Keep safe all.

DAY 73, cal 57 steel and gold

A cal 73 for day 73 would hve been possible, but there are some more cal 73's
    to come the next days.

In this virtual museum, we had already beautiful silver and gold cases, some
real pieces of art. Today it is a simpeler pocketwatch, but still one that
stole my heart at first sight.

It is a cal 57 from 1905, in a blackened steel case with some gold accents.

And these make it a very attractive watch.

I like the clean dial with Roman numerals ( mostly pre 1900 ), and I am lucky
to have found one in perfect condition, looks like it was made in 2005 and not
    1905.

What comes after the number 57?

Well, thats easy to answer it's of course 58. But then Tonny covered a nice
Calibre 58 already on Day 17 of the Virtual Museum as well as many moons ago
in this post. And we took you all along .

And of course we took you along to Revelo in Montevideo with one of my Cal. 58
as well. So we will need to come up with something new today.

So Tonny posts today a watch...quote : "... in a blackened steel case with
some gold accents... clean dial with Roman numerals
    ... found one in perfect
    condition.

So lets tonight take you the audience 180 degrees in the opposite direction.
Kicking you off on a small journey with Jeroen and I over the next weeks.

    The Watch

The watch I chose to share with you today to compliment Tonnys post of a Cal.
57 is also a Cal. 57 - in fact one that recently arrived (despite covid
lockdown) into my Collection. It's also a in a "blackened steel case" - but
then, maybe not. After all, not to much black visible here.

    What a rust bucket !

And then, we have the usually pretty side of things..... a nice lepine open
face looking up and smilling at one. Sadly, not the case here either - the
front bezel is rusted too, and the dial is shattered.

Shattered !!!!! But what did catch my eye here, was that touch of blue on the
dial - never seen that before. Has to be invessigated if it is original or
not. Could be an aftermarket add on.

A good friend from Germany asked me, as to why on earth I would buy such a
watch? A good question, I found.

The answer lies in the fact that despite this rust on the steel case....
(which my local master watchmaker Jeroen certainly does not like!)

The movement, against that is in pretty good shape.

So, here is the perfect "save a fine timepiece' retoration project - which I
hope is the start of a nice journey that Jeroen and I can take you along. Lets
see what Maestro Jeroen says... and what we have in the spares department!

The only other is that whilst the seller listed this as a Cal. 57 Americaine
(which I agree with) the Date your IWC utility is showing this as a Cal. 53.
A quick side by side with Tonnys movement here on the right below - tells me
it's one and the same movement (and in a very similar good condition with only
    some slight differences.

I think a can hear Adrian saying accross the border " what is this Marl
    fellow up to again?
    "

    Best regards
    Mark

    Ok, challenge accepted!!

Finally i have checked in after some pocket watch days in this virtual museum,
magnificent work by these 2 gentlemen.

So for this blackened case it will be a nice project to have this case and
watch restored again.. when removing rust (oxidation) we probably also remove
the black coating, which is also an oxidation.

But i believe i have some steel treatment in the workshop...

Its time to do some magic ;o)
