I'm trying hard to re-focus my collection to all (okay, mostly) IWC, and am trying to form a list of the truly great IWC pieces that will be representations of the brand for years to come. Please let me know your thoughts on the truly "must have" IWC pieces. Here's a first draft list:

    • Big Pilot (we can argue 5004 vs 5002 in another post)
    • Mark XV
    • Ceramic Doppel
    • 3536 Aquatimer on Ti
    • Jubilee Portuguese 5441
    • Portuguese Minute Repeater

    Other ideas?

    Pilot, Ingenieur, Aquatimer, and Portuguese.

One of each is a "necessity" with the particular one a matter of opinion and financial commitment. The DaVinci and Portofino lines are just fine, but they aren't "must haves."

    Cheers,

    David

    Vintage Portugueser
    Vintage Ingenieur 666
Early Pilot ( some call it a Mark 1X)
    1812 aquatimer
    Portofino Moonphase

Other special ones have come and gone but these will remain.

Portuguese is the "must have" line for me

Some of these watches are very important to me: the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar and the VC Portuguese. If I wouldn't have the Perpetual Calendar, the Automatic would be the "must have".

The next line for me is the Pilot's line, very characteristic. I have the Saint Exupéry Chrono, but in my opinion the Big Pilot is the most important one. But until now the size was a bit too much for me.

I like a lot of other watches, but "must have" is quite a harsh definition to me.

    Kind regards,
Paul, wearing "must have" VC Portuguese

Portuguese Perpetual Calendar 5021-19 red gold with black dial (will stay a dream as well, but a sweet one ;-) )

    paul i don't have a 5001 but....

i would buy one to swap it with your 5021.
i know you are secretly getting fed up of owning this watch and the more i pester you, the more you will want me to have it. LOL!

I just can't look at it that way....

The watches listed may be the "must have" watches but not necessarily for me. Many of the vintage pieces are wonderful and highly collectible but I would do just that ...collect them. If I won't wear a watch I won't acquire it. So for me the ones I must have I do have or will have...or cannot afford.

I like your list, Rob. I think

you need to add an Ingenieur, but I'm not sure which one. Perhaps the 3227, which has been discontinued after a relatively short life and whose loss is being mourned by a sizable number of people?

I might also suggest a RG Cal 89 as one of the true "icons".

    I already have my four...

    5002 transitional
    3713 classic dial on bracelet
    3227 Ingy
    5001 in rose gold.
Plus there is a pesky 5445 VC Portuguese in steel hanging around. ;>)

Interesting what's dismissed: Jumbo Inge, Mk 11...

Ref. 866 Ingenieur, Ref. 325 Portuguese, a Jones pocket watch, etc.

I like very much the contemporary IWCs, but in my opinion these are "must have's" if one wants a complete IWC collection.

    Michael

What are the "must have" IWC watches?

    A vintage (i.e. old) Ingenieur (cal 85xx)
    Mk XI
    Mk XII
    An original Portugese

I've got two of them. If I have a good year I'll get the Ing. I think that the conjunction of funds and luck required for the Portuguese is unlikely to happen.

    Great post, Rob.
