My historic Cal. 67 KM watch was having problems when I would wind it. I thought it was likely due to the lubricants drying out, so I took it to my local watch maker. What he discovered I found to be interesting, but I'm sure will be expensive and elusive to fix. Watch makers are always trying to get more accuracy. There are tour billions, fusee chains, and constant force escapements witness the Siderale. But back in it's time, my watch had a Stop Work, or a Maltese Cross. The idea was to prevent overwinding the main spring.

Well, here is the two pieces of my Stop Work, pieced back together on a piece of tape after being removed from the watch. The mainspring is also broken, the cumulative result of being wound too firmly.

I never knew about this, and while I'm sorry to hear what the problem is, now I do know a little more about this wonderful IWC.

Any body know where I might find these parts? Please email me!!

Theoretically you do not need to replace the "stop work". The watch runs fine without it.

The main function of the stop work is not to protect against overwinding, it is the task to stop the watch, when it risks to become inaccurate, when the watch (spring) is closly run out. An old main spring can also break with the "stop work" well working.
So I think when you wind the watch (after replacing the spring) every day reasonable, you feel quite well, when it is fully wound up, also without stop work", you just need to replace the main spring.

Thanks Ralph. I was told I do need to replace it also by my watch maker. But I will make some effort to find the replacement- to try and make the watch as it was when it left the factory.

    Hi Nelson,

I am pretty sure this is what you are after -

If it is, you can do a search on "the popular auction site's" and I am sure you will find a listing with the model number and part names you are looking for.

    Cheers,

    Ben

    Hi Nelson,

As per Greg's comment, I would have emailed full details but dont have your email address.

I was just searching for IWC and had read your thread moments earlier when I was browsing thru the listings and noticed the word Maltese and 67 - it was really a corner of the eye thing - note I am in Australia so you may need to do a global search.

    Cheers,

    Ben
