A friend of mine is interested in purchase a sport watch and he asked me for advice. Obviously, I refer him to IWC. I told him about Aquatimers, Ingenieurs and Pilots. I showed him my watches and catalogues, he was delighted. But, whilst we were talking, he asked me a simple question that I couldn’t answer in a direct way. He told me that he really likes all this model lines of IWC collection, but he wants to know which I consider the sport watches model line of the brand.

The tougher by definition is the Ingenieur. But this makes it a sport watch? Of course a sport watch must be a taught one but IMHO a Ref. 3227 can easily be wear with suit, not to mention an Ingenieur VC collection. It is also an elegant watch with a superb dial with refined details. A sport watch is not supposed to be elegant, isn’t it?

The water proof model line by excellence is the Aquatimer. But the Ingenieurs is tougher and the Pilot’s is more anti-magnetic by definition. So, Aquatimer is no doubt a sport watch but IWC has another model lines with more sport properties than the Aquatimer, at lest in shock resistance and antimagnetic issues.

The pilot’s watches are just pilot’s watches. It doesn’t imply that the pilot’s are a sport watches, isn’t it? I would wear my Ref. 3706 13 Spitfire Chrono with a tuxedo, not to mention a platinum or gold special or limited edition. But I also know it is one of the most robust watches I have and a Ref. 3717 looks really sporty IMHO. I have confidence in my Pilot’s watch to get it into any adventure. You can’t image what my Spitfire Chrono has passed and is still functioning in a perfect way with no complains at all. So, Pilot’s looks like and, definitely, are sport watches.

Finally, I answered him all three model lines have sport watches and there is not something like the IWC exclusive sport line. Am I right? What is your opinion?

    Kind Regards,
    M

I'll let others reply but please check your e-mail

...I generally don't reply to questions posted also in other places on the Internet, but I'm sure others will help. I hope you'll understand that I try to juggle relative priorities.

On another subject or two, I sent you your Great Post Award last week and also have sent you several e-mails in the past 3 or so days. One was rejected by your Spam filter, but I hope you received the others.

    Regards,
    Michael

How about a 3227 Ingy in Ti? Tough, rugged and....

    lightweight.

    Depends on the sport.....

and also if it is for partipation or armchair sporting.

Many sports activities watches are obviously not permitted - so is the question more along the lines of what "looks sporty".

I have been feeling and looking most sporty wit the GST Aqautimer and was my hiking, running, cycling watch of choice and also of course swimming. Now I have the Cousteau Divers (currently on my wrist) this one for me is my top IWC Sports Watch.

When watching football my pilots chrono 371701 is fantastic allowing me to ensure the referee is recording time properly but I dont feel the sportiness look of the watch as much as with the Aquatimer...... so for me the most-sporty watch from IWC comes from the GST family (several choices) or the current Aquatimer family pre-2009 and also the novelty Aquatimer family 2009.

    Happy sporting,

    Andrew

    I would recommend...

An Aquatimer in the end. And the new Aqua 2000 on rubber would be great I think!

    Problem of too much choice

It surely is a high class problem to have not one sports watch but quite many. Even over different lines.
So your friend has to choose but also the opportunity to choose.

Of course all the Aquatimers qualify: old collection, new collection and from the latter even a model in rose gold.
Then the Ingenieurs of course. I wouldn't count the Vintage Collection Ingenieur into the group of sports watches. It's a wonderful classic but - because of the strap - not necessarily a sports watch.
And then the Pilots' watches. Not on croco strap but on bracelet. Both Classic and Spitfire. A 3717 classic Pilots' chrono is my favorite choice for sports and other things.

In general for me a sports watch must not have a crocodile leather strap. Because that gets damaged and ugly very quickly during sports.
All of IWC's sports watches also qualify to be worn with a suit as well. There's no sports watch that only qualifies for a specific sports dress. That's why they're all so versatile. Even the more elegant ones like Portugiesers look sporty. Though I wouldn't count them to the sports watches.

Anyway - your friend has come to the right place. ;-)

It depends on the sport, Andrew is right

flieger line looks sporty and the inge too. when it comes to practice sports in general, I'd choose the AT line, robust calibre, waterproof, indestructible.

    Titanium 3227 with titanium bracelet

It is tough on the outside, not too big, light, water resistant, shock absorbing. Looks tough too. HURRY!
