I've not been here for some years after neglecting my vintage IWC collecting and instead restoring classic German autos.

But with recent retirement, my enthusiasm for my watch collection has returned. From the subject header my issue is finding a suitable opener for several of the IWC's I have with the case back in question.

I know of the one IWC issued some years back (reminds one of a bottle opener aesthetic 😁) but these seem like unicorns and I've struggled finding anything more generic that fits the bill.

Have others resolved this - any advice greatly appreciate.

    Thanks

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

Are you looking for this type of "bottle opener"?

the larger one is 14 sided and fits Ref 866, 666, 811, ...

the small one works for the Titan Chronograph - Porsche Design

They are used more like ring spanners. If they are used according to the bottle opener principle, the watch can be damaged :-))

Thanks Cromagnonman - it made me laugh your comment about using it like a bottle opener. I would definitely use it like a ring spanner but it still reminds me of a bottle opener :-)

I was thinking of one to use with my Yacht Clubs - so that means the larger one I guess. Though thanks for mentioning the smaller ones application on a PD Titan Chrono - I'm fortunate to also have one so worth knowing a specific opener exists.

So I guess the big question is are these openers available in the market?

    Many thanks.

Just revisiting this thread, so are the case back tools pictured avaiilable anywhere?

    Many thanks

    Hi Richard,

I don't think that these case openers are still being sold. I found mine at a watch fair. Sometimes they also appear on online auction platforms. The prices asked for are usually ridiculous.

    Thanks Cromagnonman

I gaveht seen many over the years - there is one party on a well known auction site asking 900 euro or something like that - that's crazy of course and it never sells.

I'll keep an eye out I guess.

    Thank you again.

I will visit a major vintage watch market end of August. Maybe I can find some at stands with watchmaker's workshop liquidations.

Bringing this one back up in case any developments on the case openers for the 1960's-70's YC's has emerged. I'm thinking there are still enough of the watches out there, that it seems intriguing someone hasn't made a generic version of it - it looks a not too complicated shape to cut, notwithstanding it has 14 facets.

    Cheers Richard

    Hi Cromagnonman,

thanks for the picture; but it is not to be used for the Ingenieur 666 but for the Ref. 820 also.

    best regards
