    Dear IWC Collectors:

I am new to the forum and was unable to introduce myself under the original thread.  I live in Dallas, Texas and am a fairly new watch enthusiast.  I am 57 and have decided to ditch my Apple Watch in favor of an arriving FitBit Air so that I can get back to wearing mechanical watches while still tracking my daily health metrics.

I was wanting to get a vintage piece to add to my collection, but did not want to worry about a lot of maintenance costs.  Additionally, my family is from Switzerland (roots are from Fahrni in the administrative distrct of Thun in the canton of Bern) with mother maiden name of Fahrney (changed to this US version when family emigrated from Switzerland). Thus I was drawn to learning more about the battle tested Cal. 89. Additionally, it was sad to learn of the U.S. mistaken bombing of Schaffhausen during WWII.

I came across this classic piece that the seller said was from 1959.  Open to any thoughts around year of origin, anything worth noting as a collector and potential value if members of my family would ever choose to sell long after I am gone.

GNa:  Thanks for your reply and insight.  Out of curiousity, what tips you off that the dial is not original?  I have seen many that said Swiss Made at the bottom, but also learned that IWC did not have that on all their U.S. Cal 89s.  Your feedback will help me learn what to spot.  Additionally, curious if I take this in to our Dallas IWC store at Northpark Mall, if I can ask them to replace the dial?  It keeps time perfectly.

    Hi GNa,

The cursive lettering ‘International Watch Co. Schaffhausen’ is definitely not original and is too large.

However, the Cal. 89 is a heck of a movement.
